Manchester City finally kick-off their Premier League campaign tonight with a tricky opening fixture against Wolves.
After a disappointing league campaign by their standards last season, Pep Guardiola’s side will be determined to reclaim the title this term. Tonight’s game could give an early indication of whether they’ve improved, having lost to Wolves in both meetings last term.
City’s problem wasn’t scoring goals, it was how open they could be at the back. Will new arrival Nathan Ake help them to tighten up? He could be in for a big test, especially as Aymeric Laporte is a doubt after missing most of pre-season.
City are 1/2 favourites, with Wolves 6/1 to make it three wins in a row over City. A repeat of last year’s 3-2 home win is 55/1, while there’s 10/3 about the draw.

As for who’ll score those goals, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling are both 7/2 to open the scoring.
Raul Jimenez is 21/10 to score anytime for the hosts, with Adama Traore 13/2 to net against City for the third game running.
Wolves themselves will also be looking to improve on last season. After missing out on European football on the final day of the league campaign, they’ll be aiming for a top six spot at the very least.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have lost Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota this summer, but they impressed in their 2-0 win over Sheffield United last weekend. They’re also especially well-suited to take advantage of City’s vulnerability to swift counter attacks.
They’re very well-drilled at the back and the quality of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho means they can then get the ball to their danger men. Adama Traore’s speed has tormented City in the past, while Raul Jimenez tends to be clinical in front of goal.
If City are to get only their second win against Wolves since 2017, Rodri could be the key man tonight. The Spaniard will be tasked with nipping those Wolves counters in the bud. Signed last season as Fernandinho’s successor, he struggled at times with the pace of English football. Now he’s had a year to adjust, Guardiola will hope we see the best of him.
If Rodri does his job well, Kevin De Bruyne could run the show. After equalling Thierry Henry’s record of 20 assists in a single league campaign, the Belgian will hope to enjoy team as well as individual success this year. Can he help City get off to a winning start?
