Wimbledon build-up: The ‘great’ British contingent?

As ever, Andy Murray will lead the way for Britain at Wimbledon, being their only realistic chance of winning the competition, as he did in 2013 after a straight sets win over old nemesis Novak Djokovic.

The Scot, who just claimed his fourth Queen’s Club trophy, is second-favourite at 9/4 with Coral to reclaim the title from the Serb, who is priced ahead of him in the market at 11/8.

Of the other home hopes, only Laura Robson has reached the fourth round in the women’s section, but the 21-year-old is currently on a seemingly long road to regain her talent that once led many to suggest she was a future champion.

Robson, who is a huge outsider at 500/1 to triumph at SW19, recently completed her first comeback match in around 18 months, but went crashing out 6-0 6-1 in the first qualifying round of the Aegon International in Eastbourne.

The former British number one and world number 27, who now no longer has a ranking, has been given a wildcard to compete at Wimbledon this year, but don’t expect big things from her.

Britain’s main hope this year in the women’s draw will no doubt be from Robson’s rival Heather Watson (300/1 to lift the famous trophy).

It is fair to say that Guernsey-born Watson has had an inconsistent season to date, after beginning the year in brilliant fashion by winning her WTA event, at Australia’s Hobart International tournament.

However, from there, she lost in the first round of the Australian Open and one stage further at the French Open. Watson will certainly be hoping for a favourable draw, although she did beat a top 10-ranked player for the first time this year, as she looks to at least match her best Wimbledon run of the third round, which she achieved in 2012.

Other names in the women’s draw to look out for include Johanna Konta and Naomi Broady, who reached the first and second round respectively at SW19 in 2014 and have both been handed wildcards Katie Swan, a 16-year-old, is one for the future, and will take part in the qualifiers.

In the men’s section, meanwhile, James Ward, Kyle Edmund and Broady’s brother Liam have also been given wildcards to the main draw, but only the former has managed to make it to the second round.
