GGG-Canelo rematch slated for September 15th
The fight the world has been waiting for looks back on as Gennady Golovkin and Saul Canelo Alvarez look set for a September showdown.
The original bout finished in a highly contentious draw in which many believed GGG did more than enough for the win. And the slated May rematch had to be scrapped as Canelo was suspended for a PED violation.
But the most explosive match-up in boxing is back on as two of the best fighters on the planet clash once more. However, does it settle who the best boxer in the world is when it comes to the pound-for-pound rankings?

GGG’s status
GGG, for many, is the true P4P king and has been for a few years. The Kazakh bruiser has been demolishing opponents under the radar for a decade.
His rise to prominence has only arrived now due to the retirements of Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquaio’s aged decline.
Canelo is arguably the most bankable star in the sport and an arch rival was needed to feed the marketing machine. Up stepped Golovkin and his star has shone brightly.
At present, the 36-year-old tops Ring Magazine and Boxrec’s P4P list.
But wait, there’s an upset…
Although GGG is the one in many fans’ eyes, we simply cannot look past Vasyl Lomachenko as the best pugilist on the planet.
The Ukrainian phenomenon only entered the professional arena back in 2013 after a legendary amateur career. The 30-year-old took no time to acclimatise, blasting his way to the top of the boxing tree.
In just 12 pro fights, he has already defeated the likes of Gary Russell Jr., Guillermo Rigondeaux, and most recently Jorge Linares. And that’s including moving up from featherweight to junior lightweight.
His mixture of skill, speed, and power is a deadly cocktail and simply unmatched.
What about Canelo?
Unfortunately, Canelo, officially, doesn’t even make the rankings due to his current suspension, finished in August. But on the Coral News Team’s P4P list, the Mexican superstar is probably third.
And even that’s debatable now considering how his ring absence came about. That’s not to deny Alvarez’s skills – he’s still a phenomenal talent. But he’s going to have to do a lot of making up in the next two to three years.
His re-match with Golovin will rake in huge numbers and we’ll be glued to it, as will millions. But, in our eyes, it won’t decide who the P4P king is.
