If Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor was the local travelling circus, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez v Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin is Cirque Du Soleil.

Make no mistake about it, this middleweight world title bout is the fight of the year. Almost unforgivably, Canelo v GGG has been overshadowed by what was, in reality, an exhibition match.

Mayweather v McGregor was little more than a bit of fun. A lark. Nothing was at stake bar the American’s undefeated status. And even that was never going to be really challenged.

The best v the best

There’s a reason why this fight has been given the title of the ‘Supremacy’. These are the best two middleweights in the world, brought together at their peak.

GGG is the undefeated, reigning WBA, IBF, WBC and WBO middleweight champion. The Kazak fighter is the most feared pugilist on the planet. The modern day ‘hands of stone’ knockout artist.

Canelo, arguably, hits just as hard. And at 27-years-old, with just one career defeat – to Floyd Mayweather – is deemed the better technical boxer by many within the fight game.

Addition to the classics

Unlike Mayweather v McGregor, many boxing experts are on the fence regarding the winner of this bout. For many, this is a 50/50 scenario. A toss-up.

One thing the majority do agree on is that this will rival the true great super fights.

Sugar Ray Leonard v Marvin Hagler. Muhammad Ali v Joe Frazier. Micky Ward v Arturo Gatti. Hagler v Tommy Hearns. Roberto Duran v Leonard. They all take their place in the pantheon of great boxing bouts.

For the first time in years, the sweet science finally has a match-up that could join them.

Styles make fights

It would be harsh to say that this is a boxer v brawler scenario, but in truth, it’s not far from it.

Both Canelo and GGG are fearsome punchers at this weight. However, the Mexican superstar is, arguably, harder to hit and will prefer GGG walking him down, rather than having to go hunting himself.

Styles make fights and when you have the hardest hitter in the game up against a boxer with better footwork, sparks should fly.
