Preview and odds for season finale
The ATP World Tour Finals begin on Sunday, at London’s O2 Arena.
It signals the end of the 2018 season, and provides the top-eight players in the world a chance to strut their stuff once more on the hard indoor courts.
Injury ruled out Andy Murray’s chances long ago, while Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro qualified but later withdrew.
The tournament pitches the eight players into two groups of four. The top two then progress to the semi-finals, with a showdown final on Sunday 18th November.
Novak Djokovic – 8/13
Djokovic is the top seed and our traders’ favourite to win the tournament.
The Serbian has battled his own injury demons in recent years, but enjoyed a sterling 2018 to win both Wimbledon and the US Open slams.
A pair of ATP 1000 victories in Cincinnati and Shanghai cements his status as the man to beat.
Roger Federer – 11/4
The Swiss maestro is firmly into the autumn of his career, and his continues to listen to his body and pick and choose his tournaments.
Federer won the Australian Open in January, his 20th career slam success. Didn’t win any other major tournaments this year, but is always a threat, especially indoors.
Alexander Zverev – 10/1
Germany’s Alex Zverev is one of the pretenders to the throne.
The 21-year-old enjoyed another breakthrough season, winning his third ATP 1000 title in Madrid, while a quarter-final run at the French Open was his best slam performance yet.
Marin Cilic – 12/1
Croatia’s Marin Cilic has enjoyed a steady if unspectacular year. It began well when he reached the Australian Open final, pushing Federer all the way to five sets.
But success has eluded Cilic this year, aside from victory at Queen’s Club in the pre-Wimbledon warm-up event.
Kei Nishikori – 14/1
After a disrupted winter last year, Kei Nishikori appears to be back on track.
The Japan ace reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, and followed that up with a semi-final run at Flushing Meadows.
Was also a finalist at Monte-Carlo, Tokyo and Vienna while picking up a Challenger Tour win in Dallas.
Kevin Anderson – 20/1
Big servers are becoming de rigueur in the modern game, and none are thriving more so than South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.
The 32-year-old won at Vienna and New York this year, but the highlight of his 2018 was surely beating Roger Federer en route to his first slam final at Wimbledon.
Though comprehensively beaten by Djokovic in the show-piece, Anderson’s six-hour semi-final slog with John Isner was the second-longest match in Wimbledon history.
Dominic Thiem – 25/1
Like Zverev, Austrian Thiem is another youngster threatening to upset the established order.
The 25-year-old continued his rise to glory by reaching his first slam final at the French Open, and backed it up with a trio of titles in Buenos Aires, Lyon and St Petersburg.
John Isner – 28/1
The outsider of the group is American John Isner. Another proponent of the big serve, Isner enjoyed arguably the best year of his career in 2018.
He went further than he’s ever been in a slam by reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals, and beat Zverev to win his first ATP 1000 title in Miami.
