There’s plenty of racing coming up
With UK racing now back up and running, we’ve got plenty to look forward to over the next few months.
It’s still going to be slightly different for a while at least, but once the race begins, you feel that excitement again.
And with the racing calendar starting to fall into place, we want to know what event you’re most looking forward to.
Newmarket Classics – 6-7th June
After a week of meets across the UK, racing properly announces its return with the first Classics of the season at Newmarket this weekend.
Saturday brings the 2,000 Guineas, with Pinatubo leading the betting. The son of Shamardal was unbeaten in each of his six appearances last season, including impressive wins in the National and Dewhurst Stakes.
Then on Sunday it’s time for the 1,000 Guineas. Quadrilateral looks in good shape as favourite. She’s currently unbeaten and if she maintains that record, she’d be Roger Charlton’s first Classic winner since 1990.
Royal Ascot – 16th-20th June
Royal Ascot may not be graced by the Queen this year, but there are still 36 races to enjoy across five days.
It’s set to get started on Tuesday 16th June, with the St James Palace Stakes taking centre-stage. Richard Hannon’s Threat is among the runners eyeing up the 1m Group One contest, having won the Gimcrack and Champagne Stakes last season.
Stradivarius is also bidding to win the Ascot Gold Cup for the third year running, with the Prince of Wales Stakes, Coronation Stakes and Diamond Jubilee Stakes among the other highlights across the week.
Epsom Derby – 4th July
The richest race in Britain will take place slightly later than usual this year, but it’s still set to be watched by people all over the world.
Our traders have Pinatubo as the early favourite here. He’s also the one to beat in the 2,000 Guineas. If he wins both, could he complete the rarely-attempted Triple Crown in the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster? No one has won all three races since Lester Piggott rode Nijinsky to victory in 1970.
Coral-Eclipse – 5th July
The Coral-Eclipse is always one to look forward to, but there’s even more reason to be excited this year – it’s set to be Enable’s long-awaited reappearance.
Having been denied a historic third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, John Gosden’s star is working towards that goal again. She’s stayed in training and begins her season at Sandown, as she did last year.
It’s no surprise that Enable currently leads the betting, with Japan and King of Roy second and third respectively.
