Weekend in pictures
The domestic football seasons may have ended, but there was plenty of other exciting sporting action taking place over the weekend, with Real Madrid reigning supreme in Europe once again and Tony Bellew becoming world champion in his own backyard.

Football
As well as Champions League and Championship play-off finals, football fans were treated to international action as England overcame Australia on Wearside…
Rashford strikes swiftly on England debut
It took just two minutes for Manchester United starlet Marcus Rashford to strike on his full England international debut, as he opened the scoring in an eventual 2-1 victory over Australia at the Stadium of Light. Skipper Wayne Rooney came on to add the second, while Eric Dier haplessly headed in an own-goal.
Tigers secure promotion in play-off final
Steve Bruce’s Hull City made a welcomed return to the Premier League after they toppled Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Wembley in the Championship play-off final, with a wonder strike from Mohamed Diame securing promotion success.
Zidane’s Real reign in Milan
Zinedine Zidane guided Real Madrid to their 11th European crown as Los Blancos edged out local rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties in Milan to claim this year’s Champions League honour.
Sergio Ramos netted the opener before a Yannick Carrasco leveller in normal time, with Antoine Griezmann having missed from 12 yards too, while Cristiano Ronaldo tucked in the decisive spot-kick in the shoot-out.
Boxing
British boxing has never been in a better state, with Bellew and Burns winning world titles over the weekend…
Burns makes Scottish sporting history
Ricky Burns made sporting history on home soil as the Coatbridge fighter became the first Scot to win a world title in three different weight classes, as well as being only the third Briton to do so, when stopping Italian Michele Di Rocco in the eighth round.
Price makes strong return
After almost a year out of the sport, Liverpool heavyweight David Price returned to the ring and stopped Vaclaj Pejsar emphatically inside three rounds, as he looks to make an impact in the division on his comeback.
Bellew gets up to become world champion
Merseysider Bellew picked himself off the canvas in the opening round against Ilunga Makabu to clinch the vacant WBC cruiserweight title at Goodison Park with a thumping knockout in the third. The Dave Coldwell trained fighter then outlined desires to fight David Haye after his triumph at the home of his supported club Everton.
Rugby Union
Twickenham hosted two prestigious matches over the Bank Holiday weekend, with the Aviva Premiership Grand Final followed by a warm-up Test for the Summer Tours between England and Wales.
Saracens secure double
Owen Farrell kicked nine points in the Grand Final, as Saracens followed up on their European Champions Cup success with a 28-20 victory over Exeter Chiefs. Fellow Red Rose star Jack Nowell scored a try for the beaten finalists.
England run in five while defeating Dragons
You wouldn’t know it from the scoreline, but Eddie Jones missed first-choice kicker and fly half Farrell as understudy George Ford only got one of seven attempts over the posts against Wales.
Luckily, his profligacy wasn’t punished as the Red Rose turned around a 10-13 half-time deficit thanks to four tries during the second 40 minutes.
Recalled centre Luther Burrell cancelled out the opener from Dragons prop Rob Evans, and after the break Anthony Watson, Ben Youngs, Jack Clifford and Marland Yarde all crossed for the hosts, who ran out 28-13 victors.

Quiet Reflection is Royal Ascot bound after storming to an impressive success in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock. The Karl Burke trained filly is entered in the Commonwealth Cup and the Kings’ Stand Stakes, with the former being favoured by owners the Ontoawinner syndicate.
Cricket
England Test series against Sri Lanka continued during the weekend, with Stuart Broad starring…
Broad stars in England’s Sri Lanka Test
England made Sri Lanka follow-on again, bowling the tourists out in the second Test at Chester-le-Street for 101 in their first innings. Another poor reply from the Subcontinental side to the hosts’ sizeable total of 498-9d.
Stuart Broad recorded best bowling figures of 4-40, but Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews led a second innings revival, however, with a top score of 80 to leave the touring team on 309-5 and trailing by 88 runs going into Monday’s play.
