Weekend in Pictures: England skittle out Sri Lanka, FA Cup can’t save Van Gaal

The FA Cup final is always a splendid sporting occasion, and this year’s edition was no exception. Away from Wembley, the England cricket and football teams took centre stage, while over in Ireland a couple of Classics at The Curragh shaped the flat horse racing season.

Cricket
England record a mammoth innings and 88 runs victory over touring Sri Lanka at Headingley with two days to spare in the first of three summer Tests.
Bairstow brilliance with bat and gloves
Wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow led the way for England with a maiden Test century on his home ground, smashing a hugely impressive 140 off 183 balls as the hosts posted a target of 298 that Sri Lanka simply never looked like getting. That was in no small part down to Bairstow when behind the stumps, as he took nine catches across the tourists’ two innings.
Awesome Anderson’s terrific 10-wicket haul
Who did the most damage with the ball for England? None other than Mr reliable himself James Anderson. Taking five victims per Sri Lanka innings, the pace bowler celebrated a third-ever 10-wicket haul, recording impressive figures of 10-45.

Besides The Curragh Classics over two days, the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock had those fancying a flutter on tenterhooks…
Backing Mecca’s Angel not Profitable for Temple Stakes punters
Profitable, with Adam Kirby on board, got the better of red-hot favourite Mecca’s Angel to land a thrilling renewal of the Temple Stakes at Haydock. The Clive Cox colt then successfully survived a stewards’ inquiry after the pair came close together and bumped inside the final furlong.
Awtaad allows Prendergast to taste 2000 Guineas glory again
Awtaad put in an awesome display to land the Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh, powering clear to score by 2 1/2 lengths and give veteran trainer Kevin Prendergast his first Classic winner since saddling Northern Treasure to win the race in 1976.
Jet Setting does the Minding in 1000 Guineas
On Sunday, Jet Setting shocked Minding to win the Irish 1000 Guineas and deny the odds-on favourite a Classic double. Trained by Adrian Keatley, the filly who was snapped up for just over £12k by her owners, scored by a head for a fairytale victory after a ding-dong battle throughout the final furlong.
Fascinating Rock rumbles Tattersalls rivals
Jockey Pat Smullen celebrated his 39th birthday in style. He partnered Fascinating Rock to an easy victory over odds-on favourite Found in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh, giving trainer Dermot Weld a record seventh success in the contest.
Football
Cup finals at home and across the continent took place in Europe this weekend. None is prized more than the FA Cup with Manchester United meeting Crystal Palace on the hallowed turf of Wembley in a repeat of the 1990 final…
Lingard goes into FA Cup folklore, but can’t save Van Gaal from sack
Jesse Lingard’s extra-time winner, despite Man Utd being light of Chris Smalling following his sending off, ensured the Red Devils joined Arsenal as 12-time FA Cup champions.
Opponents Palace opened the scoring through Jason Puncheon only to see Juan Mata cancel it out and force an additional half an hour. This was incredibly the only domestic trophy to elude United captain Wayne Rooney, but he now has a full set.
Vardy takes down Turks for England at the Etihad
Jamie Vardy made it three goals in as many England internationals, adding to Harry Kane’s opener (who also hit the post with a penalty) as the Three Lions continued their preparations for Euro 2016 with victory over Turkey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. Rising Bayer Leverkusen star Hakan Calhanolgu scored for the Turks.
Boxing
David Haye cruised to another comfortable knockout victory on Saturday night in London, setting up a bout with rival Shannon Briggs, while Erislandy Lara earned a rematch victory in Las Vegas…
Haye sets up Briggs bout
Former world heavyweight champion Haye dispatched Arnold Gjergjaj inside two rounds in what was another clear mismatch at the O2 Arena, as he set up a September encounter with long-standing rival Briggs, who also stopped Emilio Zarate in the opening round of his undercard fight.
Lara outpoints Martirosyan
Classy Cuban fighter Lara retained his WBA light-middleweight by outpointing Vanes Martirosyan in Nevada, as ‘the American Dream’ secured scores of 116-111 twice and 115-112 to earn a comfortable unanimous decision victory in the pair’s sequel scuffle.
