Holly Holm endured a disappointing maiden defence of her women’s bantamweight title, as he was choked-out by Miesha Tate in the final round of their thrilling match-up at UFC 196.
A bloodied Nate Diaz, meanwhile, handed Conor McGregor a shock loss in UFC 196’s main event, as he ended the Irishman’s rampant run with a rear-naked choke hold, forcing ‘the Notorious’ to tap in the second round in Las Vegas.
Sametegal success in Greatwood Gold Cup
Newbury’s feature race, the Greatwood Gold Cup, may only be a Grade 3 race, but it attracted some entrants of real pedigree, including 2014 Irish Grand National winner Shutthefrontdoor. Paul Nicholls horse Sametegal (right foreground) took this year’s renewal by four lengths.

Dimitri Payet once again proved to be West Ham United’s inspiration, aiding an incredible recovery from 2-0 down at Goodison Park to ensure Slaven Bilic’s side ran out 3-2 winners over Everton. Could European football accompany the Hammers’ move to the Olympic Stadium?

Riyad Mahrez increased Leicester’s top-flight lead to five points with a winning goal at Watford in Saturday Night Football. Just nine games to go now, and the Premier League title could well be on its way to the East Midlands.

Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace looked certain to continue being the bogey team of Liverpool when leading 1-0 through Joe Ledley at Selhurst Park, where the visitors had James Milner sent off.
Jurgen Klopp’s luck was in down in south London, however, as Roberto Firmino punished Alex McCarthy’s error to equalise, and the Reds then stole all three points when referee Andre Marriner awarded them a penalty after adjudging Damien Delaney to have fouled sub Christian Benteke.
The big Belgian dusted himself down and scored from the spot with the last kick of the game as Liverpool were controversial 2-1 winners over the Eagles.
Baggies finally beat Man Utd at home
Tony Pulis has plenty of Manchester United old boys on the books of West Bromwich Albion, and they aided the Baggies in a first-ever Premier League home win over the Red Devils. Jose Salomon Rondon struck a second-half winner, with Juan Mata sent off for the visitors before the interval.
Van Gerwen takes 20th televised title
World number one once again dominated the field, including the likes of Phil Taylor and final opponent Peter Wright, to cap off what was a thrilling Coral UK Open.
On top of defending the prestigious title, Mighty Mike also managed a nine-darter earlier in the tournament and a number of 170 checkouts.
