Virgil van Dijk odds-on to be crowned PFA Player of the Year

Liverpool defender has been a rock at the back

Liverpool may have given up top spot in the Premier League, but Virgil van Dijk still looks set to be named this season’s PFA Player of the Year.

The Reds have only let in 15 league goals this season, five less than any other side, and Van Dijk has been vital to their defensive security.

He’s now just 4/9 to be voted as the winner by his peers, which would make him the first defender to receive the honour since John Terry in 2004/05.

The odds don’t look so good for Liverpool though. The Reds find themselves back at 12/5 to win the title following Sunday’s 0-0 draw in the Merseyside derby. Manchester City are a point ahead and 1/3 to defend their title.

“Van Dijk has been outstanding throughout the 2018/19 season so far and history shows us that you don’t need to be on a title-winning side to be voted as Player of the Year. He’s odds-on in our book to claim the accolade and it will take something special to beat him,” said Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead.

“Liverpool’s title hopes suffered a blow at the weekend and although they’re only one point behind Manchester City, we do make them significantly longer odds than their title rivals in the battle for the crown. All the momentum is with City now and they’re odds-on to seal back-to-back titles,” added Aitkenhead.
