Bayern certainly have history on their side as six-time champions, with three of those triumphs coming this century, while they have also been runners-up on five occasions.

That pedigree means they are 4/6 favourites to win the first leg and just 1/12 to reach the semi-finals once again, although they were knocked out at this stage last season by Paris Saint-Germain.

Defence could be key for hosts

Bayern did not have things all their own way in the last round and fell behind to a first-half goal from Chukwubuike Adamu in the first leg of their clash with RB Salzburg.

The Bavarians dominated the match but looked set to leave Austria empty-handed until Kingsley Coman grabbed an injury-time equaliser.

It was a very different story in Munich where Robert Lewandowski took just 23 minutes to score a stunning hat-trick while Thomas Muller’s second-half brace helped Bayern cruise to a 7-1 victory.

Villarreal could have been forgiven for fearing the worst when they conceded in the first minute against Juventus but Daniel Parejo equalised in the second half of the first leg.

Juve dominated possession in the return match in Turin but could not force the breakthrough and were left stunned as Villarreal struck three times in the last 15 minutes to claim a 4-1 aggregate win.

Villarreal will need to be at their best defensively again here and can be encouraged by the way they have held leaders Real Madrid to two goalless draws in La Liga this season.
