Preview, odds and Villarreal v Bayern Munich betting tips

The first leg of the only Champions League quarter-final with no English team involved takes place in Spain and we have studied the odds to pick out some Villarreal v Bayern Munich betting tips.

The Champions League winner odds suggest Bayern are the biggest threat to the three Premier League teams who have made it to the last eight but first they must get past 66/1 outsiders Villarreal.

The first leg takes place at El Madrigal on Wednesday night with an 8pm kick-off and is live on BT Sport.

European pedigree on both sides

Villarreal are no strangers to the latter stages of a European competition but the last eight of the Champions League is a step up from the Europa League.

The Yellow Submarine went all the way in the second-tier competition last season and defied the odds in the final to beat Manchester United on penalties.

Now their aim is to repeat that success in the Champions League, or at least reach the final for the first time having made it to the last four in 2005/6.

They start the tie as 6/1 underdogs to qualify, 18/5 to win the first leg and 3/1 to head to Germany on level terms.

Making the most of home advantage will be important but perhaps not essential, having claimed a shock 3-0 victory at Juventus in the round of 16 after a 1-1 draw in the home leg.

Bayern certainly have history on their side as six-time champions, with three of those triumphs coming this century, while they have also been runners-up on five occasions.

That pedigree means they are 4/6 favourites to win the first leg and just 1/12 to reach the semi-finals once again, although they were knocked out at this stage last season by Paris Saint-Germain.

Defence could be key for hosts

Bayern did not have things all their own way in the last round and fell behind to a first-half goal from Chukwubuike Adamu in the first leg of their clash with RB Salzburg.

The Bavarians dominated the match but looked set to leave Austria empty-handed until Kingsley Coman grabbed an injury-time equaliser.

It was a very different story in Munich where Robert Lewandowski took just 23 minutes to score a stunning hat-trick while Thomas Mullerā€™s second-half brace helped Bayern cruise to a 7-1 victory.

Villarreal could have been forgiven for fearing the worst when they conceded in the first minute against Juventus but Daniel Parejo equalised in the second half of the first leg.

Juve dominated possession in the return match in Turin but could not force the breakthrough and were left stunned as Villarreal struck three times in the last 15 minutes to claim a 4-1 aggregate win.

Villarreal will need to be at their best defensively again here and can be encouraged by the way they have held leaders Real Madrid to two goalless draws in La Liga this season.

The same outcome here is 18/1 while they are 27/20 to get through to half-time on level terms and under 2.5 goals is an option for Villarreal v Bayern Munich betting tips at 6/4.

No doubting the dangerman

Lewandowski is the leading goalscorer in this seasonā€™s Champions League with 12 goals and it is a brave punter that opposes him in that market.

His hat-trick against Salzburg was his fourth treble of the season in all competitions and keeping the Polish superstar quiet is the obvious but not so easy task facing the Villarreal defence.

Bayern had the best goal difference of all the teams in the group stage as they won six out of six matches and they are on course for a century of goals in the Bundesliga.

In terms of Villarreal v Bayern Munich betting tips, the Germans are 8/15 to score at least two goals and are 5/4 to score in both halves.

Villarreal are not short of firepower themselves though, with the likes of Gerard Moreno and Arnaut Danjuma having the potential to trouble the Bayern defence.

The Villarreal v Bayern Munich odds certainly suggest there will be plenty of goals, with both teams to score priced at just 1/2.

For a bigger price, there is a #YourCall option of both teams to score, over 2.5 goals and either team to win at 5/4.

Villarreal v Bayern Munich head-to-head

These two teams have only met on two previous occasions when they were placed in the same group in the 2011/12 Champions League.

Bayern came out on top in both games, winning 2-0 in Spain and 3-1 in Munich, before making it all the way to the final which they hosted but lost to Chelsea on penalties.

Another victory by two goals here is available at 4/1 as the last of our Villarreal v Bayern Munich betting tips.
