Five US Open 2016 day 7 tips

Sunday’s Flushing Meadows matches are scheduled to be the start of the last 16 at the US Open, and all signs point to British tennis interest in both men’s and women’s singles draws for the second week.

While Andy Murray seems assured of serene progress, Kyle Edmund faces the daunting prospect of a well-rested ATP world number one Novak Djokovic in round four, after withdrawals and retirements in earlier fixtures meant an easy time for the Serbian star.

Sydney-born Johanna Konta looks good on the ladies’ side of things stateside, so it’s with her that Coral start their US Open 2016 day 7 tips…

Konta to slay Sevastova in three sets

If Great Britain’s top female representative carries on like this, she is going to crash the WTA rankings’ top 10 before this year and even possibly this Grand Slam draws to a close.

Paired with impressive Latvian player Anastasija Sevastova, who eliminated women’s singles third seed and French Open champion Garbine Muguruza en route to this point, Konta will have to be careful.

What’s encouraging is the Aussie-turned-Brit has a Grand Slam victory over this opponent on her CV. It came in Australian Open qualifying three years ago with Konta coming through in three sets, and her odds to repeat that 2-1 victory at Flushing Meadows are an awesome 11/4.

Djokovic to win Edmund opener 6-3

It won’t surprise punters to learn Djokovic is a very short-price favourite in the match betting for his battle with 13/2 outsider Edmund, but there is still value to be found in betting on this fixture.

Serbia superstar Djokovic defeated plucky Briton Edmund in straight sets (6-3 6-3) at the Miami Masters earlier this season. The form of that contest should read well, because it’s happening on the same surface.

Tasty 10/3 odds say Djokovic will win the first set by the same 6-3 scoreline as he managed in Miami. Given his easy first week of the tournament, breaking Edmund twice should prove no difficulty.

Kivtova v Kerber to contain a tiebreak

Back to the women’s singles draw now, and another of US Open 2016 day 7 tips is for there to be a tiebreak in the battle between two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova and reigning Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber.

Each of these ladies’ three previous hard court clashes have contained one set that has gone the distance, so when you consider that a nifty 9/4 price on another tiebreak in this tussle is terrific value.

Czech player Kvitova has looked back to her best in recent outings, while this surface clearly suits aggressive German second seed Kerber.

Monfils to beat Baghdatis in straight sets

Men’s 10th seed Gael Monfils is yet to drop a set Flushing Meadows this year, so is in fine fettle ahead of this last 16 showdown with Cyprus’ top tennis export Marcos Baghdatis.

Frenchman Monfils has a recent result against this opponent, beating Baghdatis in straight sets at the Cincinnati Masters last month.

Taking that and his straightforward progress through the early US Open rounds into account, Monfils appeals at 11/10 to win their latest encounter 3-0.

Wozniacki and Jack to Sock it to Keys and Tsonga

And finally, we like the look of two in-form match outsiders to combine for a delightful Sunday double.

First, Caroline Wozniacki seems to have turned her racket back into a wand as Denmark’s two-time US Open finalist prepares to play home hope Madison Keys for the first time.

As Wozniacki has way more experience than the young American, an 11/8 price looks exploitable and even more attractive when combined with Jack Sock, who is on his joint best-ever run at a Grand Slam.

Rated 5/4 to defeat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Sock and Wozniacki’s odds combine to give a present price of better than 17/4*, with a £2 punt returning £10.68 on this delectable double. It’s thus well worth taking favourites Keys and Tsonga on here.
