The heavyweight pair could finally face-off this year
Tyson Fury convincingly despatched Deontay Wilder intheir rematch on Sunday and the Gypsy King now has a mouth-watering clash withAnthony Joshua firmly in his sights.
After a controversial draw in his first bout with Wilder 14months ago, Fury delivered a stunning performance that saw his opponent’scorner throw in the towel in the seventh round.
Despite whispers of a trilogy-concluding rematch with Wilder as early as this summer, Joshua is the fight the boxing world wants to see and the Brit is 4/1 to be Fury’s next opponent.
And on current form, AJ would head into the fight as the underdog, with Fury priced at 1/2 to triumph.
Fury’s comeback
The 31-year-old was out of the ring for almost three yearsafter beating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. But after losing 10 stone and puttingpersonal problems behind him, Fury is in the shape of his life.
His dominant display against Wilder in Las Vegas has led to comparisons with boxing great Lennox Lewis. Now he’s threatening to eclipse Joshua as the nation’s golden boy.
Will Joshua agree to it?
Fury called out AJ following his first fight with Wilder, labellinghim a chicken, and he’s got his eyes on becoming the undisputed worldheavyweight champion by taking the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles.
Joshua has so far managed to avoid Fury but since losing hisundefeated record in his first clash with Andy Ruiz Jr, Joshua may feel thetime is right to put his belts on the line against Fury.
Eddie Hearn, the 30 year-old’s promoter, has made it clearthat Joshua is ready to end the anticipation but Fury may have to bide histime, with AJ set to fight Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev in June.
Who will come out on top?
Fury is the bookies favourite, with Joshua the 13/8 underdog to come out on top. But Hearn insists it will only make him more determined to prove his doubters wrong.
He said: “I said to AJ last night: ‘The great thing aboutthis is, you’re going into the fight as the underdog.’ Very rarely will you seeAJ go into any fight as the underdog but this time, you look at the bettingmarkets, AJ is the underdog against Tyson Fury. Perfect – just how we want it.”
