First round action begins in SW19
The Grand Slam action returns today, with the first games at Wimbledon. And there’s some cracking ties on the bill.
In the Women’s Singles, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is looking to repeat her impressive run here in 2016. Meanwhile, Dominic Thiem has what looks like a straightforward first round clash.

Thiem has enjoyed an excellent first half of 2018, reaching his first ever Grand Slam final at Roland Garros last month. And he should breeze past the ageing Baghdatis.
The Cypriot suffered a 3-0 whitewash to Grigor Dimitrov in the second round of Wimbledon last year. That’s as far as he’s got in any major tournament since the beginning of 2017.
Thiem won his first and third round games at last year’s Wimbledon in straight sets, and should do the job here with the minimum of fuss.
The Russian was the surprise package at Wimbledon in 2016, making it all the way to the quarter-finals. She didn’t replicate that form last year, but did get to the quarters at the Australian Open.
All in all, that should make her too strong for the Taiwanese veteran. Hsieh crashed out in the first round at Roland Garros in May. While this might not be all plain sailing for Pavlyuchenkova, she has the quality and power to win this.
Schwartzman is enjoying the best run of his career right now. The 25-year-old is going from strength-to-strength, with quarter-final berths at the US Open and French Open in the last 12 months.
His opponent is in uncharted territory, having never previously made it past the qualifying rounds in SW19. It’s hard to see past Schwartzman winning this with room to spare.
It’s been a good few months for Wang, who reached the third round of the French Open, seeing off world number nine Venus Williams in the process.
With the 26-year-old full of confidence and enjoying the best form of her career, victory over her compatriot should be straightforward.
Wang has won each of the pair’s two previous meetings – both in 2017 – and faces a player who’s never progressed past the first round at Wimbledon.
