Tuesday’s US Open tips: Ebden, Vandeweghe and Nishikori included

It’s day two of the 2018 US Open tonight. And from there, the action comes thick and fast.
There’s a host of intriguing matches on the cards tonight, and ahead of play the Coral News Team have their top tips on the action at Flushing Meadows…
The Australian might be narrowly odds-against, but he’s definitely the form player of the two.
Krajinovic has lost five of his last six games – including a Canadian Masters exit to world number 81 Karen Khachanov.
By contrast, Ebden has been impressive. The 30-year-old pulled off a few excellent wins at Wimbledon, including a straight-sets defeat of David Goffin.
Having also reached the semi-finals of the Atlanta Open in July, Ebden has the momentum on his side and should prevail here.
After a semi-final spot at last year’s US Open, Vandeweghe is looking to repeat the magic this year. And the New Yorker is likely to win this contest pretty comfortably.
Vandeweghe has won both prior meetings, and breezed to a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the most recent contest.
Flipkens has only made it past the first round at Flushing Meadows once in the past five years, so it’s also fair to say the hard surface won’t bring out her best play.
Neither player has had a brilliant 2018. However, it’s likely to just be a matter of time before Vandeweghe – who reached the last eight of three Grand Slams in 2017 – rediscovers her best form.
It’s an all-Argentine affair in this first round Men’s contest. But geography is about the only thing these players have in common.
Schwartzman was a quarter-finalist at last year’s US Open, and breezed through the early rounds. In fact, he didn’t drop a single set until the third round.
As for Delbonis, he’s not made it past the first round of a major since 2016. And he’s been easily swept aside in each of the pair’s recent meetings.
Schwartzman has won each of the last three head-to-heads without dropping a set. And in truth, he’s rarely come close to doing so.
The Japanese ace missed out on last year’s action at Flushing Meadows with a wrist injury. So he’ll be looking to make up for lost time at a venue where he’s traditionally excelled.
Nishikori reached the semi-finals in 2016, and barrelled through his opening games. Indeed, two of his first three matches of the tournament saw the Masuke native win 10 or more games than his opponent.
Marterer has never won a game in the US Open proper, and has lost to six of his last nine opponents ahead of this clash. It should be plain sailing for Kei.
