Tuesday’s US Open tips: Del Potro and Stephens take centre stage
Published:Odds and tips ahead of quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows
The last eight have been decided. More star-studded names have fallen by the wayside with Maria Sharapova and the world number two Roger Federer now out of the competition.
Federer’s was thwarted by Aussie John Millman who now faces Novak Djokovic in the quarters tomorrow. But first Juan Martin del Potro and Sloane Stephens are amongst the big names in action today.
The Coral News Team look at the four big singles ties to be played today…
Following Federer’s exit, del Potro is now 11/2 third favourite to win the tournament.
He comes up against John Isner in the last eight who has beaten him on the hard-courts in the last two meetings on the surface.
Del Potro did get one over on his American counterpart at Roland Garros in straight sets earlier this summer.
The Argentine will have to combat Isner’s huge serve but the former US Open champion could see the job through.
Sloane Stephens is fast becoming one of the most influential players in the women’s game.
However, her opponent surely won’t play as poorly in her defeat to the American in Montreal last month.
If Stephens can dictate the points and hit the winners, whilst keeping Sevastova at the baseline then she could go one step closer to defending her title.
Nadal may be buoyed by Federer’s loss but this opens up the draw for all the men still involved.
He faces Dominic Thiem who he met in the French Open final earlier this summer.
The Spaniard has won seven of the ten meetings so far, but interestingly all have been on clay.
Thiem would have learned a lot from his humbling at Roland Garros and despite a disappointing grass court season, is always a dangerous opponent.
Williams was given her first test by Kaia Kanepi in the last sixteen. The Estonian took the match to three sets, where Williams had to show her mental resolve once again.
Pliskova and Williams share a game apiece in their previous two matches. Pliskova did beat her in the US Open semi-final in 2016 and believes she has the ‘game to beat Serena’.
Nonetheless, Williams is hunting her seventh US Open title and is favourite to do so.
