Triumph Hurdle odds

The Triumph Hurdle betting is often the most competitive at the Cheltenham Festival and the odds of the winners have varied wildly over the years.

Over the last 11 years there have been three winners at 20/1 or bigger but there have also been seven winners at 13/2 or shorter.

The Triumph Hurdle provides something for all types of punters then and the odds on another thrilling contest are very short.

The race was first run at Cheltenham in 1965 and it is for four-year-old novice hurdlers.

Often run at a fast and furious pace, the contest is held on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival.

Eight hurdles are jumped over two miles and a furlong and the race produced one its most impressive winners in March when Our Conor romped to a 15 length win.

Winners of the race have not always gone on to greatness, however Dessie Hughes’ ace has a strong chance of following in Katchit’s footsteps who won the Champion Hurdle the following season as a five-year-old.

Alan King’s charge was the first horse since Persian War in 1967/68 to win both races.

Prior to Our Conor’s win, the Irish had not won the race since Willie Mullins trained Scolardy to success in 2002.

Nicky Henderson on the other hand won back-to-back renewals in 2009 and 2010 and along with Paul Nicholls, Alan King and Philip Hobbs, has helped the big English yards to dominate this race over the last decade.

One exception to that was in 2012 when the Triumph Hurdle betting was thrown into chaos by the win of 33/1 chance Countrywide Flame.

The Triumph Hurdle betting market doesn’t usually begin to form a strong picture until the new year, however Nicky Henderson’s Royal Irish Hussar has already made a good impression due to wins at Wetherby and Cheltenham.

The odds on another Henderson runner, Kentucky Hyden, were cut after an impressive UK debut at Sandown in November.

As well as his recent wins, Henderson has trained three other Triumph Hurdle winners and is the most successful trainer in the history of the race.

Elsewhere the classy flat horse Thomas Hobson has joined Willie Mullins and is prominent in the betting, whilst his stablemate Analifet, like Kentucky Hyden, won on his first start for his new stable having been recruited from France.
