Trend guide for the 2018 Juddmonte International at York

Who will land the feature contest?

The Juddmonte International is the feature race on the opening day of the Ebor Festival from York on Wednesday.

ITV will be on hand to cover the action from 1:55pm. But who will come out on top in the day’s big race at 3:35pm? Can favourite Poet’s Word carry on from his recent Ascot success? Or will we see a shock sprung from further down the field.

The Coral News Team has put together a handy trend guide, based on the last 10 renewals, ahead of the feature.

8/10 had won at a price of 7/1 or shorter

Long-odds winners are hard to come by in this race. Only Arabian Queen has triumphed at a greater price than 7/1 in the last decade-and-a-half. David Elsworth’s charge pulled off a huge shock at 50/1 back in 2015.

That means only four horses remain from this year’s selection, with Poet’s Word, Roaring Lion, Saxon Warrior and Cracksman all progressing through to the next test.

7/10 had won carrying 9-5 or 9-6

Weight isn’t as important at the top level. But winners of this race tend to carry 9-5 or 9-6 when doing so. That spells bad news for two of the remaining competitors.

Aidan O’Brien has won this race four times in the last decade but Saxon Warrior will carry 8-13 and is scratched off as a result.  Roaring Lion won the Dante Stakes over course and distance in May but is also cross off this list at 8-13.

Poet’s Word and Cracksman remain.

6/10 had won last time out

Good form is imperative ahead of the Juddmonte. 12 of the last 16 victors had won prior to tackling the 1m 2f distance. That shortens slightly to six in ten when you narrow it down to the last decade.

Regardless, it’s bad news for one of our two remaining options. Cracksman may have landed the Coronation Cup at Epsom the time before last but his most recent run in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes saw him finish second behind Poet’s Word.

Sir Michael Stoute’s charge has proved uber-consistent this season and is taken to justify favouritism here.
