Transfer deadline day: Premier League’s winners and losers

The Winter transfer window has slammed shut after a hectic deadline day, with the majority of Premier League sides strengthening their squads for the remainder of the season ahead.
With many deals occurring at clubs involved at both the top and bottom of this season’s top-flight table, Coral look at the winners and losers from this year’s transfer deadline day.
Crystal Palace – winner
Alan Pardew’s Eagles, 9/2 with Coral to be relegated, were the busiest top-flight club of this season’s winter market, securing the signing of eight new players. This included plenty of movement on deadline day, making two permanent deals for winger Wilfried Zaha and midfielder Lee Chung-Yong.

Zaha’s loan spell from Manchester United was made permanent, signing a five-and-a-half-year contract at Selhurst Park, where he originally left to join the Old Trafford outfit, while Chung-Young Lee joined for an undisclosed fee from Bolton Wanderers, with Barry Bannan heading to the Macron Stadium as part of the deal.
Chelsea – winner
Jose Mourinho boosted his side’s chances of securing their first Premier League title for five years, capturing Colombia winger Juan Cuadrado from Fiorentina, with Mohamed Salah heading in the opposite direction on loan.
German forward Andre Schurrle’s departure to Wolfsburg paved the way for the World Cup star’s Stamford Bridge switch, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal with the Blues.
The wonderful winger will bolster Mourinho’s men in their hunt to pip Manchester City to the league crown, having struck six times in 25 appearances for Fiorentina already this term.

Chelsea came out as winners
Everton – winner
Roberto Martinez’s Toffees have struggled so far this season, but the arrival of pacey wideman Aaron Lennon at Goodison Park could give them the lift that is needed to climb away from the relegation places.
Everton are currently only seven places above the drop zone, but Lennon’s season-long loan from Tottenham will provide the toothless Toffees with some much-needed creativity and speed down the Merseyside flanks.
The former England international became a frustrated figure at Spurs, making just nine appearances, but Martinez’s men beat the likes of Hull City and Stoke City to his signature.
Southampton – winner
Ronald Koeman secured the signing of Benfica’s attacking midfielder Filip Djuricic on loan for the rest of the season, with full-back Ryan Bertrand also penning a permanent move to St Mary’s.
The Serbian international Djuricic completed his switch after terminating a loan spell with Bundesliga outfit Mainz, while English defender Bertrand joined from Chelsea after an initial loan stint which began last summer.
West Bromwich Albion – winner and loser
The Baggies have enjoyed a terrific turnaround in form and fortune under Tony Pulis’ reign, and they had more reasons to celebrate after the arrival of Manchester United stalwart Darren Fletcher on a free transfer.
However, West Brom failed in deadline day moves for West Ham United’s Carlton Cole and Norwich defender Martin Olsson.
Pulis tried to offload Graham Dorrans to the Canaries as part of Olsson’s possible move to The Hawthorns, but a deal collapsed meaning Pulis may have to stick with Joleon Lescott at left-back this season.
West Ham United – loser
Sam Allardyce was keen to boost attacking options at Upton Park, but a last ditch bid for Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor proved to be unsuccessful.
The Hammers also failed in an attempt to swap out-of-favour Winston Reid for Everton centre-back Sylvain Distin, leaving Doneil Henry as the only arrival at East London.
Manchester United – loser
After dominating rumours for the entire month, United’s Dutch manager ended up spending no money at all on new signings.
The Old Trafford faithful have been left disappointed as central midfield and defensive positions have been left unstrengthened, with the Red Devils aiming to claim a Champions League spot this term.
Aston Villa – loser
Paul Lambert’s Villans have failed to score a league goal in over 10 hours of football, forcing the West Midlands outfit into a late move for Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert. Although, the former Saints star rejected a move, leaving Villa with limited attacking options in their battle to beat the drop.
QPR – loser
Harry Redknapp is well-known for last minute deals on deadline day, but this year he failed miserably, with a last gasp move for Matt Jarvis ending disastrously. Rangers aimed to cancel Mauro Zarate’s loan from West Ham, amid concerns over his fitness, and bring in Jarvis from the Hammers.
Harry was not as active as usual and seems to have taken it badly with resignation
Instead, the Premier League denied QPR their wish and were left with Zarate among their ranks. QPR are odds-on 4/6 to be relegated this term, odds which could soon shorten further as Redknapp resigned this afternoon.
