Towcester preview: Carhue Princess weighted to collect
Published:David Metcalf | January 7, 2016
Carhue Princess has a good record at Towcester and can take advantage of a drop in the weights to land the 2m 3f handicap chase there today (13.05).
The Tom Symonds trained mare has won three times and been placed twice in just seven starts at the venue, and relishes the stiff uphill finish.
In the last of those successes back in January, Carhue Princess showed a tremendously game attitude to dig deep and to beat Khazium by 1 1/2 lengths off a mark of 90.
The nine-year-old went on to finish third at this venue off 92, and is now able to race off a reduced rating of just 85.
That is 5lb lower than when last successful and gives Carhue Princess major claims from a handicapping perspective.
The daughter of Desert Prince also comes into the contest having finished in the frame in all three starts this season and, with the testing conditions holding no fears, this looks a nice opportunity for Carhue Princess to get back in the winners’ enclosure.
Bishop Wulstan on a wing and a prayer
In the 2m handicap hurdle (13.35), Bishop Wulstan can go well at a big price now eased in grade.
The gelding was a dual winner in 2015 when trained by Harry Whittington, and in the last of those successes at Newbury beat Eminent Poet by two lengths on soft ground.
Bishop Wulstan now meets that rival, who is the red-hot favourite for this, on 1b better terms and having been rated as high as 129 is able to race off a mark of just 108.
That is a career-low and gives the five-year-old, who is now in the care of Peter Bowen, a big shout at the weights.
Bishop Wulstan also comes into the race on the back on an improved effort when third in a class 3 contest at Ffos Las, and the drop back to class 4 company should enable him to be very competitive if building on that.
