Top 5 Newcastle v Liverpool Premier League clashes

95-96 game still lives on in the memory

Sunday sees Newcastle United and Liverpool renew old rivalries at St. James’ Park.

The iconic fixture has a permanent membership of Premier League folklore after some amazing games over the years.

To whet the appetite ahead of the big match, the Coral News Team delve into the archives and have dug out the top five clashes.

Newcastle 1-5 Liverpool, 2008-09

Rafa Benitez’s Reds were cruising at the top of the Premier League at Christmas when they visited the North East.

It ended in an absolute drubbing for Joe Kinnear’s side as Newcastle crashed to a 5-1 loss.

Steven Gerrard bagged a brace for Liverpool, with Sami Hyypia, Ryan Babel and Xabi Alonso all getting on the score sheet, too.

Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle, 1995-96

Arguably still the Premier League’s most iconic game, both clubs were vying with Manchester United when Newcastle travelled to Merseyside.

Kevin Keegan’s swashbuckling side were the great entertainers of that mid-nineties era but that came with a cost.

The pendulum swung a number of times with the Magpies going behind early before leading 2-1 and 3-2.

Somehow, they succumbed to an equaliser, and then a last-gasp Stan Collymore winner in a breathless, pulsating clash.

Newcastle 2-2 Liverpool, 1999-00

These two finishes off their 90’s rivalry with an absolute belter at St. James’ Park on Boxing day 1999.

Newcastle had taken the lead through Alan Shearer before a Michael Owen brace put the Reds ahead.

The Magpies threw players forward in search of an equaliser and it duly arrived through big Duncan Ferguson.

The huge number nine fired himself at a Warren Barton cross to send the home crowd into raptures.

Newcastle 0-6 Liverpool, 2012-13

This was peak Brendan Rodgers football as the Reds blew a hole through a Newcastle United team who didn’t know what had hit them.

Extraordinarily, Liverpool managed six goals in this one without the help of Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan was banned after he was caught nibbling on Branislav Ivanovic’s arm the previous weekend.

However, Daniel Sturridge was still in fine fettle as he bagged a brace. The other goals arrived through Fabio Borini, a Jordan Henderson double, and Daniel Agger.

Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle, 1996-97

A slightly different take on the same scoreline from the previous season, this fixture still produced another classic.

The Reds flew into a 3-0 lead before half-time with goals from Steve McManaman, Patrik Berger, and Robbie Fowler.

Kevin Keegan’s Magpies set up a grandstand finish, somehow pulling it back to 3-3.

Keith Gillespie, Faustino Asprilla and Warren Barton all took advantage of David James’ howlers to level it.

However, Fowler’s last-gasp winner broke Geordie hearts again as Anfield revelled in more North East despair.
