Tom Scudamore: “Schooling the big boys creates a lot of excitement”

Coral ambassador Tom Scudamore previews his weekend rides at Wetherby and Carlisle
It has been a very good start to the season for me. I rode a treble at Worcester on Thursday where I was on board winners for three different trainers.
I’ve been fortunate that both David Pipe and Neil Mulholland’s yards are going well, and we are where we want to be at this early stage of the campaign.
I’ve been busy riding over the summer, so it doesn’t really feel like the start of a new season to me. However, we have had a bit of rain now and suddenly the horses you are schooling are the big boys. It creates a lot of excitement, and you start to think about some of the major races across the campaign.
This weekend I am riding at Wetherby on Saturday and then on Sunday I travel up to Carlisle for the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase.

Saturday
He is making his chase debut in this race, but he has had plenty of schooling at home. He ran to a decent level over hurdles, so we are hoping he can transfer that across to chasing, and possibly even improve.
This race looks like a nice starting point for him. He is the highest-rated runner in the field, but obviously some of these do have some experience over fences.
He ran three times over fences last season, and although he remains a maiden, he improved with each outing. On his last start at Newbury, he finished second, less than a length behind the winner. If he can build upon that, we are going to have a great chance.
My only concern is that it is his first run since January so hopefully he is match fit.
He won last year at Uttoxeter on soft ground. There looks like there will be a little rain around for him, which will help his chances. He has moved to Neil Mulholland’s yard from Dan Skelton.
This is a very competitive race where you can make a case for a number of these, including my horse.
Sunday
He is a nice horse but there just haven’t been many opportunities for him. He didn’t jump hurdles very well, so he has been fast-tracked to fences. This will be just his third start under Rules, but he is a points winner.
We were very happy with his debut over fences last season at Exeter, but this is a higher grade so he will need to take a big step forward on that. He deserves a bit of luck and hopefully this season he can start making waves.
