Three reasons why Matias Vecino would be a good signing for Chelsea
Published:Sarri linked with Inter Milan midfielder
It’s a very big season for Chelsea. They finished outside the top four for the second time in three years last season. They’ll be determined to make sure that doesn’t become a trend.
Maurizio Sarri has a big job on his hands in his first year at Stamford Bridge. It’s 4/6 that they make it back into the top four, though there are question marks over key areas of the squad.
The futures of star players Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois still need to be resolved. Talented young players like Ruben Loftus- Cheek want to be assured of playing time. And Sarri will look to bring in his own additions.
One player who could be on his way to West London is Matias Vecino. Inter Milan reportedly want £32m for the midfielder.
The Coral News Team have looked at how he could fit in…
Speed up Sarriball
Chelsea had a reactive, rigid approach under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. Both managers won the title that way, but Sarri will try to implement a totally different gameplan.
The former Napoli boss will want his team to control the game and take the initiative.
It’s going to take some time to get his new players up to speed, but Jorginho will help to implement his ideas. The midfielder was a key member of Sarri’s Partenopei side.
Vecino would be a big help too. He worked with the manager at Empoli and knows exactly what he wants. With Jorginho and Vecino alongside N’Golo Kante in a midfield trio, Chelsea would already be a long way towards putting the manager’s ideas into practice.
Better options
Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko both had hugely disappointing first seasons at Chelsea. They might not stick around much longer.
Crystal Palace and Southampton are reportedly chasing Drinkwater, while Bakayoko is being tracked by Sevilla, Inter and AC Milan.
If they’re moved on, it would open up a spot for Vecino, a player Sarri knows and trusts. Their departures could also pave the way for Loftus-Cheek to get the opportunities his talent merits.
Vecino is a defensive midfielder, but the Uruguay international is very comfortable on the ball. With Cesc Fabregas also involved, the midfield would be full of players who can make things happen.
Solid platform
If Hazard does stay at Chelsea, he should thrive under Sarri. Hazard is already one of the best attacking players around. But this will arguably be the first time he’s played under an offensive manager at Chelsea.
Vecino would help to provide the foundation that Hazard and the other attackers players need to truly shine.
His presence alongside Kante and Jorginho would give them the freedom to torment defences, while keeping things secure at the other end of the pitch.
