King George Legends
With the big race on Boxing Day the King George VI Legends Race we take a look back at the legends that have ran it over the last few years, providing a simulated view of each horse in our unique racing app, which measures each winner up against the other.
Before we get to the simulator, let’s take a trip down memory lane at some of the finest runs throughout the years, starting with a true legend.
Kauto Star

An unbelievable horse, who won four consecutive King George VI races, the French-bred National Hunt champion was one of esteemed trainer, Paul Nicholls’ biggest successes. Having featured in six successive races, he became the only horse to win it five times in 2011, prompting owner Clive Smith to gush “He’s amazing, I’ll never have another like him.”
On 24 June, 2015 he was seriously injured while falling in his paddock and despite best efforts of veterinary staff, he had to be humanely euthanized. A legend who will never be forgotten.
Desert Orchid
A first rate hurdler, Desert Orchid was one of the best chasers of all time. Known affectionately to his followers as “Dessie”. Between 1986 and 1990, the gelding won the King George VI four times and is fondly remembered among the racing community.
When he ran his first King George in 1986, he was sent off as a 16/1 long shot with jockey Simon Sherwood subsequently steering him to a 15 lengths victory. Check out how he rates among others in our King George VI racing simulator below!
Best Mate
Arguably one of the most popular horses in Britain stunned the racing world when the horse collapsed on the track in 2005, suffering a huge heart attack at Exeter. Having won the King George VI chase in 2002 the Irish-bred horse is still fondly talked about and shot to stardom after winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup three successive years between 2002 and 2004.
