A round-up of the big moments…
It was another two superb weeks of tennis at SW19 as Wimbledon drew to a close with a pair of incredibly deserving winners.
Angelique Kerber won her first Queens Club title, beating Serena Williams in a straight-sets victory. And Novak Djokovic won his fourth Wimbledon title in a handy straight-sets finale with South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.
The Coral News Team look back over events and pick out the key talking points…
No fairytale for Serena
She’s the undisputed Queen of tennis. But Williams’ fairytale return to the Wimbledon courts ended without silverware.
But it was still a triumph-of-sorts as the US star made her first Grand Slam final since the birth of her baby girl. It’s been a long road back for the multi-Grand Slam winning champion, but Serena looks on her way back to her best.
Comeback kid Kerber
In beating Williams, Kerber laid to rest her 2016 Wimbledon final defeat to the same opponent. And by doing so, the 30-year-old won her third major.
The German has also won the Australian and US Opens and now just needs the French Open to make it a career Slam. It’s been a tough few years for Kerber since her initial climb to the number one spot a couple of seasons ago.
But her victory at SW19 was well-deserved and will shoot her back up near the top of the rankings.
Novak back on-song
It was quite clear that Anderson was going to be no match for Djokovic early doors. The South African was simply too tired from his epic semi-final clash to be anywhere near effective.
But Djokovic put in his own awesome performance against Rafa Nadal in their last-four match. And that was arguably the real final.
The giant Serbian and the king of clay put on a clinic in world-class tennis to enthrall Centre Court. The final set was one of tennis’ great match-ups as both stars went toe-to-toe.
Best of the Britons
It was a little strange not having Andy Murray involved. The Scottish ace pulled out on the eve of the tournament having felt he wasn’t ready for a Grand Slam after hip surgery.
But others stepped up in his absence. Kyle Edmund’s star has risen exponentially in the last few seasons.
And the 23-year-old gave a good account of himself over the last couple of weeks, bowing out to the eventual winner Djokovic in the third round.
