Super Cup tips from German and Spanish clashes
On Sunday night both the German and Spanish Super Cup finals will take place, with these encounters being the equivalent of England’s season opening Community Shield, as Bayern Munich face bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona meet Sevilla.
On German soil, it’ll be Bundesliga champions Bayern, now under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti, that take on DFB-Pokal winners Dortmund, while La Liga victors Barca will collide with Copa del Rey conquerors on Spanish territory.
Manchester United managed to get their season off to a successful start when toppling Leicester City at Wembley, and now these four sides from Germany and Spain will look to do the same. So, ahead of the Sunday night action across the continent, Coral have selected four Super Cup tips. Read on to see our selections…
Four or more goals struck between Barcelona and Sevilla
For the last four consecutive Spanish campaigns, there has been at least one fixture between Barcelona and Sevilla that has produced four or more goals, and that looks set to continue this time out.
Last season, Barca ousted their opponents 5-4, while in the term prior the Catalans secured a 5-1 victory, and another four or more goals to be scored in this match-up can be backed at a tasty 11/8 with Coral.
Barcelona to triumph and both sides score
Recent fixture history suggests this Spanish Super Cup final match-up will feature plenty of goals, with nine of the last 10 meetings having saw both outfits get on the scoresheet, stretching back to September 2012.
It’s reigning domestic champions Barcelona that have been more successful of late though, prevailing in eight of the previous 10 match-ups, with this also including three of the last four encounters.
Luis Enrique’s Catalan giants are the record holders of this competition too, having emerged victorious on 14 occasions, with their most recent triumph coming in 2013 and they are 2/1 to triumph with both teams scoring.
Bayern and Dortmund to be level after 90 minutes
In the German version of the Super Cup, which will be decided in extra-time or penalties if level after 90 minutes, will see Bundesliga dominators Bayern take on their closest challengers and rivals Dortmund.
The Bavarians and Black and Yellows played out back-to-back goalless stalemates in their last two meetings, while three of their previous four clashes have also ended all square.
With such a close recent history, yet another draw after normal time can be backed at 12/5 to occur in this latest Super Cup final face-off.
Clinical Lewandowski to strike inside normal time
Bayern hitman Robert Lewandowski really enjoys this fixture, having netted against his former club in four of his last six outings, and the Poland international marksman is a promising 13/10 to dispatch anytime in normal time once again.
The Munich sharpshooter dispatched a double in the 5-1 thumping last season on home soil, while his three fixture goals during the 2014/15 campaign included a Bundesliga winner away from home.
Lewandowski was in incredible form last term and began proceedings swiftly, something he will look to emulate this time around, having managed to bag a sensational 49 goals in all competitions for club and country.
