Sunday racing at Sedgefield

Our best bet looks to cause a stir

3.20pm Handicap Chase looks pick of the seven races scheduled for Sedgefield on Sunday and we offer you our NAP and next best of the card, as well as a selection in every contest, for those looking to brighten up their day with a multiple.

Two-miles three-furlongs lies ahead of this snappy six-runner field and, of the main contenders, Shadows Lengthen looks the winner for me. Mick Easterby’s vastly experienced 11-year-old may have seen better days, he’s not put his head in front since late in 2010, but he has been threatening a return to the winner’s enclosure of late.

Runner-up at Perth last summer behind Katgary, he got nowhere near an impressive victor that day, but there were plenty of positives to be taken from the effort, and he was seen staying on at the end to finish as best of the rest. That was over 2m 4f, but his CV shows him up as a previous winner over this trip, and has scored around Sedgefield too.

Shadows Lengthen was third last month at Doncaster, again nowhere near the major prizes, but he faces what appears to be a wide-open field here and continues to tumble in the weights. Jake Greenall sits in the saddle and I am happy to take a chance on the pair at what should be a decent price.

Yur Next looks a lively punt

Yur Next stands as the next best of the day, going in the final race, a two-mile mares handicap hurdle due at 4.20pm. Robert Hawker’s ride has let punters down in the past, beaten into second by Peal Of Bells at Taunton on her penultimate start, despite going off as jolly.

She made amends, winning last time out at the same track, meaning she has won two of her last three and hasn’t finished outside of the places in five. Against a modest looking field, she’s rated by the trading team and, I must say, I agree with them. Let’s see her go and win again!
