It’s nearly time for one of Britain’s greatest sporting events
Glorious Goodwood is one of the sporting and social highlights of the flat racing season.
It features five days of thrilling action set against the magnificent backdrop of the Sussex countryside and sees some of the best horses compete in prestigious races as well as battle-hardened handicappers take each other on in historic contests such as The Stewards’ Cup which was first run in 1840.
The highlight of the meeting is the Group 1 Sussex Stakes on day two – Wednesday, July 27th – and features a mouthwatering rematch between Galileo Gold and The Gurkha.
Galileo Gold triumphed in this year’s 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and has since gone on to beat French 2,000 Guineas winner The Gurkha in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Many believed The Gurkha was an unlucky loser having been denied a clear run, and the Aidan O’Brien trained colt has since gone on to run a blinder to finish runner-up in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.
Connections of both colts are bullish about their chances, and Galileo Gold will once again be ridden by the ever popular Italian born jockey Frankie Dettori who rode his first UK winner at Goodwood aboard Lizzy Hare on June 9th in 1987.
The Gurkha will be partnered by Ryan Moore and what is being labelled the “Duel On The Downs” and the outcome is likely to determine which of the duo is the best three-year-old miler in Europe.
