Crazy scenes in Greece after Euro win, 2004
Euro 2016 is on the horizon, as 24 countries embark on their respective campaigns in France, but back in 2004 it was Greece that went all the way to record a historic victory against then hosts Portugal in a thrilling final.
Following their incredible triumph over a Portuguese side featuring the likes of Deco, Luis Figo and young Cristiano Ronaldo, the Greeks arrived home to more than 100k passionate fans in and around their home stadium.
The hysterical scenes included the national anthem being proudly belted out by everyone, while the players got involved in dancing routines and were even offered Christian Orthodox crosses by the leader of the Greek church, Archbishop Christodoulos.
Greece’s triumphant squad had their stadium arrival delayed by two hours too due to as the bus carrying them only inching its way through streets thronged with people waving the country’s blue and white flag, while tens of thousands of supporters lined the 25-mile route between the airport and the centre of Athens.
Fire hazard during Corinthians celebrations, 2009
In 2009, Brazilian giants Corinthians took the term ‘going out in a blaze of glory’ a bit too literally, as their celebrations after winning the Paulista Championship almost ended in a flaming disaster.
The club’s players, including the legendary former Brazil striker Ronaldo, were forced to halt their celebrations as fireworks during the trophy presentation led to a frightening fire which almost burnt those involved.
Thankfully nobody was hurt and Corinthians were soon able to carry on the party after a minor scare, following a season which they went through undefeated.
Ramos drops Copa del Rey, 2011
After prevailing in the 2011 Copa del Rey, Real Madrid took to the streets for their bus parade and defender Sergio Ramos had a moment to forget.
The Spaniard showed exactly why he isn’t a goalkeeper when dropping the coveted Copa trophy to the ground from the rooftop of his side’s bus roof, with the vehicle then driving over and damaging the silverware.
Stekelenburg drops Dutch prize, 2011
Another embarrassing moment next, but even more so due to the player involved actually being a legitimate shot stopper, as current Fulham-owned Southampton goalie Maarten Stekelenburg let the Eredivisie title slip from his grasp during his Ajax days, following Ramos’ example.
The towering Dutchman was one of the stars of his former side’s domestic success in 2011, but showed no signs of his previously impressive outings between the sticks when carelessly dropping the famous silverware.
Man Utd fans climb atop scaffolding, 2013
As the celebrations for Manchester United’s 2013 Premier League success reached the streets of their home city, fans couldn’t contain their excitement as at least 100k turned out in force to paint the town red.
With the Red Devils supporters cheering on their heroes that stood before them on the rooftop bus, many took their place within the nearest scaffolding and ignited flares, causing ecstatic scenes among the fans after a season which turned out to be Sir Alex Ferguson’s last in charge at Old Trafford.
Wilshere starts anti Spurs chants, 2015
In 2015, following Arsenal’s second successive FA Cup victory over Aston Villa, England midfielder Jack Wilshere further adhered himself to the onlooking Gunners fans and angered rival Spurs supporters by blasting out a series of Tottenham-aimed chants.
Using a speaker, Wilshere rallied the jubilant crowd alongside his Gunners teammates, with Arsenal playmaker eventually being charged for misconduct and slapped with a £40k fine from an unimpressed FA.
