Shot stopper saga: Where will Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas end up?

Published:

The future of Iker Casillas still remains unclear, with Manchester United’s David de Gea seemingly likely to join Real Madrid this summer, possibly leaving the veteran shot stopper with an unfamiliar and unwanted role of number two goalkeeper.

Ahead of a potentially long summer transfer saga, which will heavily involve De Gea, here are five possible destinations for Casillas.

Arsenal
Arsene Wenger’s Gunners are reportedly in prime position to secure the Spaniard’s services this summer, as De Gea looks set to arrive between the Bernabeu sticks.

Casillas is 5/1 with Coral to become Arsenal’s next shot stopper at the Emirates, as they search for a new regular man to guard their goal for next season, after David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny battled it out for number one position this term.

Manchester United
Louis van Gaal is preparing himself for the departure of sensational stopper De Gea in the coming months, or maybe weeks, and he made early indications in January of that possible transfer when signing Victor Valdes.

Casillas could be used as part of a deal involving his fellow countryman going in the opposite direction, and is 5/1 to join the Red Devils, although Van Gaal is more likely to want a younger number one.

Roma
Serie A side Roma are also reportedly keen on acquiring a new stopper and, with ageing stars known for prolonging their careers in Italy’s top-flight, Casillas could be the next experienced star to test himself in a challenging division (9/4 to join).

Fenerbahce
Despite the Spaniard’s recent decline in form in recent seasons, Casillas would still undoubtedly provide a great deal and quality and experience to the Turkish club, and is 5/2 to go to the Super Lig side.

Inter Milan
Another Italian outfit reportedly seeking a new goalkeeper is Roberto Mancini’s Inter, who already hold the talented Samir Handanovic in their ranks, with Real’s legendary stopper 5/2 to join.

A swoop for the potentially out-of-favour Casillas could see his Slovenian counterpart exit the San Siro, having been linked with Manchester United, and he will actually soon be facing England in a Euro 2016 qualifying clash.
