Shearer thinks Arsenal’s squad isn’t strong enough this season

Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer pulls no punches in his assessment of Arsenal following their 4-3 defeat by Liverpool on the opening weekend of the Premier League!

Shearer also has his say on his beloved Newcastle United and their chances of Championship promotion…

“This could be the season where Arsenal miss out on the top four”

I watched the Arsenal v Liverpool game and nothing I saw changed my mind about Arsenal. I don’t think their squad is strong enough. I don’t think they’ll win the league this season and I do think this could be the season they miss out on the top four.

They will have periods during the season when we sit back and say how brilliant they’ve played, but ultimately with thirty eight games in the season I don’t think their squad is strong enough.

I didn’t think it was strong enough last year either and so it proved. They play Leicester on Saturday, and both teams will be desperate to win after both lost last weekend, and all the other big hitters got off to good starts.

I don’t expect either side to be challenging for the title this season. Leicester winning the title last year was a miracle, and I don’t think that can happen again. It should be an entertaining game.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Newcastle went on a bit of a run”

I said before the season started that I didn’t think it would be as easy for Newcastle in the Championship as everyone thought and the odds suggested, and they’ve got off to a rocky start.

It’s a long hard season, and they lost their opening two games, but I do think they are going to get promoted, whether that’s as one of the two teams who get automatic promotion or through the play-offs.

It was just important to get that first win, as they did against Reading, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they went on a bit of a run now they’ve got that little bit of confidence. The pressure is now off them and winning is a great feeling.
