Shearer says: “I think Liverpool will cause Chelsea problems at the back”

Coral football ambassador Alan Shearer spoke exclusively to our very own Nicola McGeady about the Chelsea v Liverpool Friday Night Football fixture.

In the latest of a series of video interviews, Shearer discusses the latest Diego Costa controversies, the absence of John Terry and David Luiz’s return to the Premier League, Liverpool’s attacking play and their own defensive issues.

“Referees will spot what Costa is up to”

Having previously touched on how the Blues’ Brazil-born Spain striker Costa likes to “push boundaries”, Shearer feels it will only be a matter of time before the officials wise up to his overly physical style.

“I don’t think it’ll be too long before referees spot what he’s actually up to,” said Shearer. “[And punish Costa with] yellow and red cards.”

With Chelsea club captain Terry set to miss out with the ankle problem he picked up in the 2-2 draw at Swansea City last time out, Antonio Conte reportedly has no hesitation in throwing Luiz straight back in for a second debut against the Reds.

“It’ll be fascinating to see how he copes with the Premier League again,” Shearer added of ball-playing Brazil centre back Luiz.

“Liverpool scoring impressive goals”

While stressing he feels the Friday night Stamford Bridge battle is “a tough one to call”, Shearer has clearly liked what he’s seen so far from Jurgen Klopp’s visiting team.

“Liverpool going forward have been very impressive with some of the goals they’ve scored,” continued Shearer. “I think Liverpool will cause Chelsea problems at the back.”

“With regards to Liverpool winning the league again, I look at them and think defensively they’ve not really improved in those positions and that was their Achilles heel last season.”
