Best Rome derby moments
The first Derby della Capitale of the campaign beckons in the Sunday Serie A showcase clash, and Italy’s most explosive rivalry will be expected to provide plenty of goals, cards and bust-ups.
Eternal City outfits Lazio (17/10 to win at the weekend) and Roma (27/20) take to their shared Stadio Olimpico turf with just one point between them as the race for the top three Champions League spots and, even conceivably the Scudetto, continues with both clubs still in the mix.

There have been some cracking clashes between the capital clubs in their long Roman rivalry, so Coral writers present our best ever Rome Derby moments in modern times…che gol!
Totti’s terrific selfie

The forward always saved his best for this big stage and few moments summed up skipper Totti’s devotion to the cause more than the iconic image of him taking a very modern celebratory selfie in front a rapturous Curva Sud in his 40th Derby della Capitale.
Requiring just one more goal for his tally to be the derby’s leading league scorer of all-time, Totti of course instead scored two to send him clear and, crucially, level the score to finish 2-2 in 2015. Cue the commemorative selfie after the captain’s dramatic equaliser.

Montella madness

Montella and Totti were the goal-getters, with the former for once stealing the show from his skipper with a top-class quartet of strikes.
Dejan Stankovic would go on to provide a consolation, but the scoreboard didn’t make pretty reading for Eagles support as Roma ran riot.
Lazio’s best result

An absolute pile driver from Cristian Ledesma just before the break plus a penalty conversion from full back Massimo Oddo and later strike by Massimo Mutarelli combined to make it a match to remember.

2013 Coppa Italia final

It was a tight and tense affair on the pitch but full of plenty of palpable passion as Senad Lulic made the difference to deliver Lazio a rare cup and boasting rights. Though, it was off-field antics that made the headlines as celebrating Eagles support took to the streets to revel and even went on to graffiti pictures of Roma talisman Totti.
Thumbs down for Totti

Il Gladiatore (The Gladiator) took to behaving more like a Roman emperor than a fighter, with the Olimpico his Colosseum, after the Giallorossi had edged the Eagles 2-1 thanks to a deadly double from Montenegro marksman Mirko Vucinic.
The levelling brace was part of a courageous comeback and emotions spilled over with backroom staff and squads from both sides involved in altercations on the pitch after the final whistle.
What scenes! Though, the match is most remembered for Totti’s regal thumbs down gesture to the crowd, that it was claimed was a taunt to Lazio about potential relegation. Innocent or guilty, Totti (19/10 to score anytime this weekend) was adjudged to have provoked fans and was fined accordingly.

Eagles swoop in six-goal spectacular

Viewers were treated to a stupendous six goals and two red cards, with spectacular strikes in particular from Goran Pandev and Mauro Zarate who opened scoring for the Eagles with a goal each in the four minutes after kick-off.
Stefan Lichsteiner and Aleksandar Kolarov added the rest of Lazio’s haul to delight the Curva Nord, with Philippe Mexes and Daniele De Rossi’s goals keeping the Giallorossi in the game.
Four star Roma

Stephan El Shaarawy, Edin Dzeko, Alessandro Florenzi and Diego Perotti treated fans to four goals as the Eagles’ defence collapsed in stupendous style. Marco Parolo nabbed one back for Lazio, before defender Wesley Hoedt saw red as the clock ticked down, adding a last dash of drama to proceedings.

We doubt the next instalment of this riveting Roman rivalry will be as one-sided, however…
