Rumour Reel: Man Utd to make surprise Mikel move to boost midfield options?
Published:Coral’s rumour reel
With Christmas just around the corner and, subsequently, the January transfer window too, many Premier League managers are keeping close tabs on potential targets for next year.
This reportedly includes Manchester United, with under pressure boss Jose Mourinho seemingly set to raid his former club Chelsea for a midfielder, while Everton are keen on a Southampton centre back.
Read on to find out who could be going where in the next transfer window as part of Coral’s latest rumour reel for November 29th…
Man Utd make Mikel move?
Portuguese tactician Mourinho could be set to make a shock swoop for one of his former players at Stamford Bridge, with Blues anchorman John Obi Mikel being lined up as a surprise target in January.
The 29-year-old has not featured under Italian coach Antonio Conte this current campaign and there are no plans to renew his present deal in London, with his contract set to expire next summer.
Such a scenario has led Mourinho to attempt and lure the Nigerian midfielder to Old Trafford in the New Year a massively cut-price.
Mikel was on the verge of a switch to Man Utd a decade ago before a last-minute U-turn as he joined Chelsea instead. He could soon be arriving at last, though, with Mourinho keen on acquiring his services to boost his midfield options for the remainder of the term.
Toffees target Van Dijk
Ronald Koeman is aiming to bolster his defensive options at Everton next year and has outlined compatriot and former Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk as a key transfer target.
The current Saints central defender has performed gallantly since arriving from Scottish champions Celtic last summer and has become hot property, proving he can deal with the pace and attacking threats of the top-flight.
It also seems Koeman has not been put off his attempts to capture Van Dijk despite a mammoth £40m price-tag being slapped on the Dutchman by his current south coast employers.
The 25-year-old would represent a huge transfer coup if a deal can be agreed, but Southampton will be desperate to retain the services of one of their key stars of the campaign so far.
