Mehmas can deliver under Dettori in Coventry Stakes

Mehmas wasn’t seen to best effect when runner-up last time out and can get back to winning ways in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes on the opening day of Royal Ascot (15.05) now stepped up to 6f.

The Richard Hannon trained colt was a very exciting prospect when winning his first two starts in the manner of a well-above average sort.

After overcoming greenness and trouble in running to score on debut at Chester, when showing a smart turn of foot to win by a cosy 3/4 of a length, the two-year-old put in a scintillating display to follow-up in conditions’ contest at Newbury.

Mehmas was held-up in the latter by a confident Frankie Dettori, and after making smooth headway on the bridle a furlong from home only had to be shaken up inside the last to quicken clear and beat Global Applause by 3 1/4 lengths.

Fine run in National Stakes

Although unable to confirm that form when runner-up to Global Applause in the Listed National Stakes over 5f at Sandown, Mehmas lost little in defeat in a race which didn’t go to plan.

After losing ground when going left as the stalls opened, Mehmas had to be switched a furlong from home before staying on strongly to be beaten just over a length.

Given how the race panned out it was an excellent effort, and the way in which the son of Acclamation finished off the contest suggests extra furlong in this will be right up his street.

Jennies Jewel an Ascot Stakes gem

In the 2m 4f Ascot Stakes (17.00), Irish raider Jennies Jewel looks decent each-way value in a wide-open and competitive contest.

The Jarlath Fahey trained mare is a smart hurdler who took advantage of a handy mark to land a 2m handicap on soft ground at the Curragh last month in good style.

Jennies Jewel made all and only had to be pushed out to score readily by 3 1/4 lengths.

Although now 10lb higher in the weights, the nine-year-old may still not be badly treated judged on the pick of her hurdles form and will relish this stamina test.

Jennies Jewel also has plenty of winning form on soft ground, and from a good draw in stall two could prove tough to peg back if securing and early lead.
