Raheem Sterling cites “world class players” as key to Man City move

In his own words, Raheem Sterling will be playing with “world class players” that have the potential to be “winning things year in, year out” at Coral’s 12/5 Premier League title chances Manchester City.
There may be something of a back-hander to former club Liverpool in this, who sold their only top star of recent times in Luis Suarez last summer, as they blew their best chance of a major trophy in years back in 2013/14.
“The world class players that are here and a squad that are capable of winning things year in, year out,” Sterling told Man City’s official website upon signing. “The more quality players that are around you, the more quality it brings out in you so I can’t wait to get started and play alongside them.”
And Sterling looks set to occupy a wide berth whatever tactical set-up Manuel Pellegrini goes with. When City play two up top, it’s Aguero plus another out-and-out striker which is usually Wilfried Bony or Edin Dzeko.
In a 4-2-3-1, David Silva or Yaya Toure tend to occupy the number 10 role, which frees them from defensive responsibilities. There’s also Samir Nasri to consider, but he should be shunted to the opposite flank, leaving Sterling to establish himself ahead of Jesus Navas in the pecking order.
Sterling showed some gratitude to the Reds, however. “I’d like to thank a few people who have helped me along the way,” he added. “I’d like to thank Rafa Benitez for taking me to Liverpool as a 15-year-old – that was a massive step for me and a new challenge.
“Also to Kenny Dalglish for showing such faith in me and putting me in at such a young age. Finally I’d like to thank Brendan Rodgers for giving me a chance and an opportunity in the first-team.”
There will also be Champions League football for Sterling at the Etihad, and City are 14/1 shots to finally crack Europe’s elite club competition.
