Saturday racing, odds preview and tips

The Great St Wilfrid Handicap is the highlight of a seven-race card from Ripon, Newbury and Newmarket on ITV this afternoon.

A maximum field of 20 runners are currently pencilled in to tackle the 6f sprint, with Growl and Pipers Note vying for favouritism.

There are also two Group races to get stuck into across an afternoon which should act as a lovely appetiser for the Ebor Festival next week. The Coral News Team have got you covered with their ITV Racing Tips.

Course specialist on form at Ripon?

We kick things off with Ripon’s most valuable race of the season. As such, it seems appropriate to go with hat-trick chasing course specialist Pipers Note.

Ruth Carr’s hopeful loves it around here and recently notched an incredible eighth course and distance win a fortnight ago. The eight-year-old has placed in this race in each of the last two years and goes again this time around off a 1lb lower mark than 12 months ago.

He’s drawn nicely, loves the course and should definitely give punters a good run for their money this afternoon.

Another award-winning performance from Yafta?

You won’t find many horses more consistent than Yafta. The Dark Angel colt has not finished out of the places in nine starts, since coming home fourth on debut at Chelmsford in 2017.

He went above and beyond to land the Hackwood Stakes last time out ahead of a number of high-profile names, including Invincible Army and Group 1 fifth, Hey Jonesy.

That’s some cracking form for a colt who has only recently made the step up into Group company. The ground could be a potential sticking point this afternoon. But Jim Crowley is plenty bullish about his chances. And we’re more than happy to take a chance on Richard Hannon’s raider as a result.

Godolphin glory once again?

Charlie Appleby is in red hot form this season. The Godolphin trainer has saddled a number of top class sorts to victory and looks to have a game chance again here with the likeable Hamada.

The four-year-old has been consistently impressive in victories at Wolverhampton and York this term before landing a 1m 6f contest by 7l at Newmarket last time out.

He looks readymade for this step into Group company. Man of the moment James Doyle is booked to ride.
