Odds, tips and preview for today’s racing

All eyes are on Newmarket this afternoon, as next season’s Classic generation do battle in the Dewhurst Stakes at 3pm. Later on, 34-runners will compete for the huge £307,000 pot in the latest edition of the Cesarewitch Handicap.

We’ve already taken an in-depth look at the chances of the four main contenders in the Dewhurst. But we’ve also provided a seven-pronged selection of tips for all of the televised action at Newmarket and York below.

Advertise – 3:00 Newmarket

Favourites have won as many as they’ve lost in this race over the last decade. So a relative chance is taken on Advertise to land the 7f contest for Martyn Meade.

The Showcasing colt has progressed nicely over 6f, winning three of his four starts since edging Pogo on debut at Newbury. His only defeat so far came in the Coventry Stakes against fellow Classic contender, Calyx, who looked a superstar in the making prior to injury.

Subsequent victories in the July Stakes and Group 1 Phoenix Stakes confirm the raider’s quality, while connections are confident of his chances after a short-break. Our pick needs to come on again here, but with man of the moment Oisin Murphy booked to ride, hope is that the young jockey can unlock further improvement.

Just In Time – 3:40 Newmarket

Big Handicaps are always a puzzle. And they don’t come much bigger than the Cesarewitch. The £307,250 pot has been won by a pair of 50/1 and 66/1 fancies in the last 10 years.

Just In Time is our pick for this at a nice price. Alan King’s hopeful has a terrific strike-rate in handicaps and is bidding for the hat-trick here after reeling off wins at Goodwood and Doncaster.

The four-year-old will need a bit of luck in such a big field. But he’s as progressive as they come and can defy a 4lb penalty to finish in the frame over a distance he should relish.

Flying Pursuit – 3:15 York

With the rain expected to come on the Knavesmire, it’s mudlark Flying Pursuit who is taken to get the job done for Tim Easterby. The five-year-old won over course and distance in July and followed that up with an impressive third in the Ayr Gold Cup last time out.

The Pastoral Pursuits gelding will look to get the run of the race over 6f here. If he does, then he could get his nose in front under the guidance of regular jockey Rachel Richardson. Experience in big-runner handicaps will also help the raider’s chances.
