Premier League team of matchweek 8: Five star Aguero

Published:

Another thrilling weekend of Premier League action has passed us by, with Sergio Aguero grabbing the headlines on Saturday with his goal scoring exploits, while Arsene Wenger’s quick-firing Arsenal formidably overcame Manchester United during Sunday’s fixtures.

After the top-flight thrills and spills, Coral bring you our Team of the Week for matchweek eight. Do you agree with our selections?

Formation: 4-3-3

Marco Arnautovic struck the only goal of the game for Stoke City against Aston Villa, giving them a big three points on the road, but their sturdy stopper Butland was on top form again between the Potters sticks to earn another clean sheet.

Right back: Carl Jenkinson
On-loan from Arsenal, Jenkinson is enjoying another successful spell with West Ham United and in his latest outing, the talented full back helped Slaven Bilic’s Hammers make a gallant comeback, making them 12/1 for a top six finish.

Jenkinson pulled a goal back for the East London outfit after 45 minutes, with Sunderland having initially taken a 2-0 lead, before Dimitri Payet levelled proceedings, though the former was a star performer.

Since arriving at St Mary’s from Scottish champions Celtic this summer, dominant Dutchman Van Dijk has been superb under Ronald Koeman at Southampton and it was another stellar showing against Chelsea which earned the Saints a 3-1 victory.

The former Hoops centre back controlled his side’s rearguard and saw off any threat from the Blues attackers, including Radamel Falcao, with Van Dijk also missing out on a penalty, despite being wrestled to the ground by Branislav Ivanovic.

Centre back: Gabriel Paulista
Brazilian defender Paulista evidently had gotten over his previous clash with Chelsea’s Diego Costa, putting in a perfect shift at the heart of Wenger’s defence to halt any Man Utd threat.

Arsenal blitzed to a 3-0 triumph at the Emirates, with Alexis Sanchez once again proving to be key, though Paulista was solid and brought a great deal of composure in front of the returning Petr Cech for a shut-out.

Flying full back Schlupp terrorised the wings for Leicester City during an eventual 2-1 triumph over Norwich City on their travels, netting what was ultimately the winning goal early in the second-half.

The Ghana international could have doubled his tally too, if not for the Canaries defence, but his well-finished strike saw Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes continue their fine form.

Centre midfield: Yohan Cabaye
Proving to be one of the signings of the summer with each passing game, France international midfielder Cabaye has been a revelation at Selhurst Park, compounded by another incredible match-winning performance against West Bromwich Albion.

Cabaye enjoyed another magical midfield display, setting up wideman Yannick Bolasie for Crystal Palace’s opener, before rounding proceedings with a clinical penalty after 89 minutes to clinch a comfortable 2-0 win.

Deadly Danish attacker Eriksen provided two moments of brilliance from set-pieces to gift Tottenham a point on their visit to Wales to tackle Garry Monk’s Swansea City.

No player has scored more free-kicks since the Dane’s arrival in the top tier in September 2013, and his latest double of excellent set-pieces showed that it’s not just Spurs’ Harry Kane who can cause teams problems going forward.

Attacking midfield: Mezut Ozil
During the Gunners’ spellbinding opening few minutes of their encounter with the Red Devils, German World Cup-winning playmaker Ozil perfectly provided Sanchez with the chance to open proceedings, before dispatching his own strike only a minute later.

Saints forward Mane continues to prove himself in the top-flight with sensational showings and his latest helped Southampton dump champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with the ferocious wideman netting once and setting up another.

Left wing: Alexis Sanchez
Chile ace Sanchez tore youthful Man Utd full back Matteo Darmian to shreds in the first period in London and did a similar job to the Italian’s half-time replacement Antonio Valencia in the second.

The Gunners sharpshooter struck twice in the opening 19 minutes to topple Louis van Gaal’s disappointingly poor Red Devils set-up, with his second strike being an absolute thunderbolt.

Manchester City’s amazing Argentine put on a world-class showing for the spectators at St James’ Park, incredibly firing in a 20-minute five-goal haul to gift his Sky Blues side a 6-1 victory.

Aguero was simply irresistible, blowing away Newcastle United with his deadly display on Tyneside, with City now odds-on 8/11 favourites for the title.
