Premier League team of matchweek two
The Premier League has only been back in football fans’ lives for two weeks, but England’s top-flight has already produced an abundance of thrills and excitement.
So, after the latest action across the country, Coral pick out a starting XI to make up our Premier League team of matchweek two. Read on to discover who made the cut…
Formation: 4-4-2
Goalkeeper: Eldin Jakupovic (Hull City)
Hull City continued their surprise start to the season by toppling Swansea City 2-0, but it was in-form shot stopper Jakupovic that was pivotal in securing three points, as he made a spectacular save to deny Gylfi Sigurdsson and produced an excellent overall display to keep a clean sheet.
Right back: Kyle Walker (Spurs)
England full back Walker was superb against Crystal Palace and kept his former teammate Andros Townsend at bay throughout their eventual 1-0 success, providing the Londoners with strength at the back and was always an option going forward.
Centre back: Michael Keane (Burnley)
Burnley stunned Liverpool 2-0 at Turf Moor thanks to goals from Sam Vokes and Andre Gray, though their rearguard excelled to halt any Reds revival. Clarets centre back Keane was the star of the backline, leading by example and showcasing exactly why he has been linked with champions Leicester City.
Centre back: Curtis Davies (Hull City)
Alongside makeshift central defender Jake Livermore, Davies shone brightly for Hull in their second successive win and clean sheet. He kept Fernando Llorente quiet throughout proceedings, decisively blocked a late Kyle Naughton strike and nodded on a vital assist for one of Shaun Maloney’s two goals.
Left back: Luke Shaw (Man Utd)
Since returning from injury and featuring under Jose Mourinho, Shaw has looked back to his best again at Old Trafford, and the wideman’s telling performance against former club Southampton proved that, as he won the penalty which Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring from and provided a constant outlet on the flank.
Right midfield: Cristhian Stuani (Boro)
Boro wideman Stuani fired in a wonderstrike past Sunderland before adding a second and helping Aitor Karanka’s men triumph 2-1 in the derby encounter, with the Uruguayan putting in a man of the match performance down the right side of midfield.
Centre midfield: Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea)
For a second match in a row Diego Costa netted a late winner for Anotnio Conte’s Chelsea, in a 2-1 success over Watford, but it was Fabregas’ incredible through ball from deep that handed his international teammate the chance on a plate. The midfield ace started on the bench, though looks to have forced his way into contention for a starting spot next time out.
Centre midfield: Gareth Barry (Everton)
Everton benefited from a sublime showing from midfielder Barry in their 2-1 triumph over West Bromwich Albion, as he played a big part in Kevin Mirallas’ strike and dispatched a late winner on his 100th Premier League appearance. Toffees coach Ronald Koeman even went as far as praising Barry as one of the best players he has ever worked with.
Left midfield: Michail Antonio (West Ham)
West Ham United winger Antonio became the first player to score at his club’s new home ground of the Olympic Stadium, as he headed in the winner over Bournemouth, as well as dazzling on the left side of midfield for the Hammers in their 1-0 victory.
Striker: Sergio Aguero (Man City)
Argentine hitman Aguero continued his typically clinical form against Stoke City, as he dispatched a Man City double in the 4-1 thrashing and handed new boss Pep Guardiola further early success in new surroundings.
Striker: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Man Utd)
The Red Devils cruised to a 2-0 success over Southampton thanks to a brace from new frontman Ibrahimovic, as he first sent a thumping header past Fraser Forster, then calmly tucked home a penalty to make it three goals in two top-flight outings for the Swedish sharpshooter.
