Premier League: All Rose-y for Chelsea who pursue Tottenham left back Danny
Published:Chelsea, 15/8 favourites with Coral to win the Premier League this season, have told London rivals Tottenham to name their price for left back Danny Rose, with the Blues prepared to pay at least £15m for his signature.
The 25-year-old has had a couple of breakthrough seasons at Spurs and was a mainstay under Mauricio Pochettino last term, occasionally switching with Ben Davies. Having come through the academy at Leeds United, the player is from good stock and has improved significantly while he has been at Spurs.
With Chelsea having sold Filipe Luis back to Atletico Madrid, Jose Mourinho only has two first choice full backs at his disposal, in Cesar Azpilicueta (naturally a right back) and Branislav Ivanovic.
This has led Mourinho to pursue a number of options, with Augsburg’s Abdul Baba Rahman also said to be under the radar.
Although Azpilicueta has proved to be a more than capable deputy, he is the only other alternative for the club and Mourinho may have plans to restore him as a right back. Following Ashley Cole’s departure from the club, Chelsea have been lacking a quality choice in this area and Rose has similar attributes to the former England international.
Like Cole, Rose is also on the periphery of the England team, though has the likes of Leighton Baines, Keiran Gibbs and Ryan Bertrand in front of him in the pecking order, and then there is Luke Shaw and the highly-rated Aaron Cresswell (also an option for Chelsea) to consider.
A move to Stamford Bridge would certainly increase his stock and should he help the Blues win silverware, he could quickly become a regular for the Three Lions and go onto emulate Cole, who was capped 107 times for the national team.
Rose was reportedly pursued by Manchester City earlier in the summer, though they declined to make a bid. Whether Chelsea do remains to be seen, though Spurs who have Davies in reserve could be set for a big windfall.
