Played for both XI: Chelsea and Porto ahead of Mourinho return

Jose Mourinho has a Porto homecoming on his hands in the Champions League this midweek, and to celebrate the influence of the Chelsea manager, who steered his old club to the European Cup in 2004, Coral look at which players have been on the books of both.

Not all of the XI below made first-team appearances at Stamford Bridge and the Estadio do Dragao, but they were at one time or another in the set-ups of both!

A reserve goalie behind Vitor Baia and Petr Cech respectively, few players that were so seldom involved collected as many trophies as Hilario. Three Tacas de Portugal, two domestic titles, the 2009/10 Premier League, four FA Cups, the Champions League and Europa League are all on the stopper’s CV.

Right back: Filipe Oliveira
This Porto academy product never played for their first-team, but did make five Premier League outings for Chelsea between 2002 and 2005. Also capable of playing on the wing, Oliveira never really lived up to his potential and had to be content with 21 Portugal Under-21 appearances, but no senior caps.

Centre back: Paulo Ferreira
Naturally a right back, long-serving Blues defender Ferreira was deployed at centre half in his twilight years at the Bridge. His two years at Porto (2002-04) could hardly have been more successful, and he is one of many in this XI to have followed up UEFA Cup glory with that Champions League triumph. Ferreira won 11 major trophies with Chelsea too.

Probably one of the best Portugal internationals to ever play Premier League football. Clever and cunning Carvalho was a master of the dark arts and, unlike current Blues striker Diego Costa, got away with plenty. Playing under Mourinho three times, the third at Real Madrid, the current Monaco man has won 16 major honours across three countries to date.

Left back: Jose Bosingwa
Attack-minded full back Bosingwa is more familiar to fans down the right, but we’ve had him switch flanks to accommodate others. Defending has never been his strong suit, but the DR Congo-born player has two Champions League trophies on his CV!

Central midfield: Maniche
Tidy midfield operator Maniche was loaned to Chelsea during the second half of 2005/06, and his handful of appearances helped Mourinho retain the Premier League title during his first spell at the Bridge. Given a deep-lying role in the diamond system Porto used to such great effect in big European games, he was a hugely under-rated player.

Tattoos, crazy hairstyles and bushy beards made combative midfield Meireles both scary to look at and come up against in the tackle. His presence in the engine room helped the Dragons dominate their domestic league, racking up four Portuguese titles in a row (2005-09). A stint with Liverpool came between that and the 2011/12 Champions League and FA Cup double with Chelsea.

Right wing: Ricardo Quaresma
Wideman Quaresma managed four Premier League outings on loan at the Blues in 2009 and also had two spells at Porto, but is best known for flopping spectacularly at Barcelona. Although frozen out by Mourinho at Inter Milan, he was a squad member of their 2009/10 treble winning team. Quaresma is now in his second stint at Besiktas.

Brazil-born Deco was Mourinho’s playmaker at Porto and, unlike Quaresma above, made a successful move to Porto. Two Champions League triumphs, plus league titles in his homeland, adopted country, Spain and England are among 15 major honours on his CV. Deco’s two terms at Chelsea included the 2009/10 Premier League and FA Cup double.

Left wing: Christian Atsu
Ghana winger Atsu is yet to play a competitive first-team game for the Blues, but he turned out 29 times for Porto in 2012/13. His potential alerted Chelsea, who have since loaned him out first to feeder club Vitesse Arnhem, then Everton and now Bournemouth.

Striker: Radamel Falcao
The Dragons remember Colombia hitman Falcao as a lethal forward force, not an expensive flop who looks a shadow of his former self. Perhaps a return to Porto, where he scored 72 goals in just 87 outings will revive his fortunes. Falcao is 6/1 to score last for Chelsea on his old stomping ground.
