Sports Personality of the Year betting update
England Women goalkeeper Mary Earps is the 10/11 favourite in Coral’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year betting for 2023 after finishing fifth in the race for the Ballon d’Or Feminin.
It has been an impressive year for the Lionesses shot-stopper, who saved a penalty in the World Cup final defeat to Spain in August and won the competition’s Golden Glove award.
Earps enjoyed a fine 2022-23 season at club level as well, helping Manchester United finish second in the Women’s Super League, and her fifth-placed achievement at Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony is the best ranking achieved by a female goalkeeper.
“It’s been an outstanding year for women’s football in 2023 and it’s no surprise to see one of England’s star players at the head of the Sports Personality of the Year betting,” said Coral’s Lewis Knowles.
“Earps and the rest of the Lionesses really captured the public’s imagination this summer and we expect her to be very popular in the public voting.”
Stuart Broad is the second favourite at 2/1 after the England men’s cricket team signed off a memorable Ashes summer in style earlier this year, flooring Australia in an intoxicating finale at the Kia Oval to square the series 2-2.
Broad took the last two wickets to fall as he headed into retirement with a 49-run win.
After 16 years, 167 Tests and 604 wickets in the Test arena, the manner of Broad’s departure has set a new benchmark for triumphant exits, having earlier hit his final ball as a batter for six.
Jockey Frankie Dettori is the joint-third favourite at 12/1 after signing off his British racing career with a fairytale double triumph at Ascot last month.
The 52-year-old Italian was going to officially bow out at the Breeders’ Cup meeting at Santa Anita.
But he has performed an amazing U-turn and will instead continue his career in America next year.
Dettori’s place in the pantheon of the sport’s greatest jockeys has long since being assured, with his achievements far too many to mention.
He has been associated with numerous equine greats, including dual Arc heroine Enable, the mighty stayer Stradivarius and two Derby winners in Authorized and Golden Horn.
Dettori made his last ride in Britain a winning one with an inspired last-to-first victory on King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes having earlier sealed an epic triumph on Trawlerman in the opening Long Distance Cup on Champions Day.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson is also at 12/1 after winning heptathlon gold at the World Championships in August.
Her victory in Budapest saw her regain the title she first won in 2019 after beating favourite Anna Hall to cap her comeback after an injury nightmare.
Jude Bellingham is the fifth favourite at 33/1 after making a sensational start to his career at Real Madrid and starring for England across 2023.
Bellingham, who moved to Madrid in the summer from Borussia Dortmund, has scored 13 goals already for the La Liga giants, including a late double in his first El Clasico to earn a dramatic 2-1 win in October.
