Yes, this was indeed Sam Tomkins’ debut for the Warriors, in which he ran in five tries against north western side Whitehaven.
The 26-year-old, who has gone on to become one of the best rugby players in the world, is set for a sensational return to boyhood Super League side Wigan, who are 5/2 to win the Challenge Cup this season.
Having spent a season in the NRL with outfit New Zealand Warriors, Tomkins has agreed a four-year-deal to return to the Cherry Whites, and coach Shaun Wane couldn’t be more delighted, stating that the England international is re-joining to be part of the club’s culture.
“It’s a great shot in the arm for English rugby league and for Wigan,” Wane said. “There is something in why they come back here – it is a good culture, our staff are good, we do things right and that’s why these players come back to us.”

Last season’s Super League Grand Finalists had first refusal on the player who graduated from their academy, and Wane is looking forward to seeing what he has learned from his experiences.
“We have got one of the best players in the world coming back to our great club and I’m really, really pleased,” Wane continued. “He’s one of them where he will have learnt from his experiences.
“He’s a real good competitor and I’ve seen him do things in games in New Zealand that are going to make him a better player. He’s excited to come but he’s got a job to do in New Zealand first.”
Tomkins will be a superb addition to the Wigan ranks next season, joining an exciting team that includes a crop of very talented youngsters, who are just starting to gel, as well as brother Joe, who also had a stint in the NRL.
