Nice price taken in Chester Cup

Plenty to like about Watersmeet

The Chester Cup headlines Wednesday’s schedule, and with a competitive few days of racing getting underway at 1.50pm, for the first of a seven-race card, there’s plenty to keep punters occupied.

You can back the winners right here at Coral, from Chester and beyond, and if you scroll to the bottom of this page our horse racing team have put together their best bet in each race, designed to boost your midweek multiples. Read on as we talk you through our approach in the highlight.

Worth opposing the market leaders

The Chester Cup, due to post at 3.35pm, is a two-mile two-furlong affair, and of the packed field expected to contest, our traders have pinned their hopes – rather loosely – on Blakeney Point, who has been marked up as early favourite. There’s not a lot in it at the time of writing however, the next three in the betting, Golden Spear, Sea Of Heaven and Who Dares Wins, all sitting at 7/1.

We are more than happy to take a bit of a gamble in this one however, and side with a bigger price in Watersmeet at 8/1. In-form Mark Johnston sends out his experienced six-year-old, and with Franny Norton booked as pilot, I think we will get a serious run for our money here.

The selection arrives in great nick, having run four times already this year, showing two wins and a pair of placed efforts. Success around Lingfield and Chelmsford in February and March was followed with a runner-up spot on the polytrack in the All-Weather Marathon Championships last month.

Step up in trip should help

Beaten 1 ¾ lengths by Winning Story, there were plenty of positives to be taken from the day, as he led going for home, before being picked up at the finish. Watersmeet was noted staying on in the final strides, suggesting he’s more than capable of giving us more.

With that in mind, the longer trip should play to his strengths, and if following our thinking you’re backing a consistent horse who always gives value for money, from a trainer who arrives with confidence onside. Add in the booking of Norton and we have an 8/1 poke that should out-run his odds, at the very least.
