Next Everton manager: Five possible bosses to help unstick Toffees

A 3-0 loss for Everton on Wednesday evening may have helped Sunderland stay in the Premier League, but also sealed Roberto Martinez’s fate in charge of the club, as the Catalan coach has since been axed.
The Toffees are now a disappointing 12th in the table, just six points ahead of the Black Cats and, with the role now vacant we have picked out five possible contenders for the Goodison Park job…
Frank de Boer
Having just parted ways with Ajax, after the Dutch giants were pipped to the Eredivisie title by PSV Eindhoven on the final day, former Barcelona and Rangers defender De Boer is now the odds-on 1/2 favourite to succeed Martinez.
Netherlands centurion De Boer, now 45, has been heavily linked with the Toffees for a while now, and his agent even recently stoked the fires.
“He would love to join a club like Everton or Valencia,” said his agent. “It’s all about the right philosophy and how they play football. That is what Frank is looking for.
“I have told Ajax there is no other club and I have not held discussions with anyone.”
Mark Hughes
Hughes (8/1 joint second-favourite) played for Everton towards the end of his stellar playing career, and has also been talked up in the press as a potential replacement for Martinez.
His Stoke City side will finish above the Toffees this term, being four points ahead up in 10th with one game to go, but his former team’s new found riches and promising talent could be enough to lure the Welshman to Goodison.
The former Wales star has also managed another club he used to play for, when he was Blackburn Rovers boss for four seasons, while he was also head coach for his nation for five years prior to that.
David Moyes
Would Moyes make a return to Everton after unsuccessful spells at Manchester United and Real Sociedad?
The fans most likely wouldn’t be against it, after the Scot’s 11 seasons at the club, where he turned them into a solid top eight team for a number of years.
Moyes, who led the Toffees to fourth place in 2004/05, though, is currently priced more likely to be next Celtic boss at 5/1, compared to his 8/1 odds for a Goodison homecoming.
Manuel Pellegrini
Pellegrini will be out of work after Manchester City’s final game of the season, with Pep Guardiola already confirmed as his replacement, but the Chilean might just fancy a stay in the Premier League having not done a lot wrong.
Everton’s new cash-rich majority owners will want a high-profile name, and with a league title and two League Cups to his name with the Citizens, Pellegrini would certainly fit the mould.
You can back the 62-year-old at 10/1 to take over at Goodison.
Martin O’Neill
O’Neill has already done a commendable job with the Republic of Ireland, after guiding them to the Euro 2016 finals, but the 64-year-old might just fancy a return to club football before he retires.
The Northern Irishman certainly has pedigree in the English top flight, both as a player and manager, and he’ll be most fondly remembered for his spell with Leicester City, as well as Scottish giants Celtic.
At 20/1, O’Neill is a long shot for the job, but Everton could do much worse.
