Newcastle preview: Burner hot stuff on handicap debut

Published:

Burner has shaped with plenty of promise in three maiden runs, and looks weighted to open his account on his handicap debut in the 1m 2f contest on today’s card at Newcastle (15.35).

The Lady Jane Cecil trained three-year-old caught the eye on his debut when fourth at Doncaster, travelling strongly for much of the 1m contest before weakening late on and being allowed to come home in his own time.

Burner then put in a similar display at Leicester when sixth of 13 to Quick Defence, and the winner went on to finish a fine seventh of 28 in a competitive handicap at Rpyal Ascot and is now rated 90.

That is strong form in the contest of this class 5 contest and makes Burner’s opening mark of 72 look very exploitable.

The son of High Chaparral has since gone on to post a career-best effort to finish fourth of 12 to Tunnel Creek in a decent 1m maiden at Windsor and the step up to 1m 2f looks sure to suit.

Burner has also been gelded ahead of this assignment and, with Paul Mulrennan in the saddle, this looks a golden opportunity for him to get off the mark.

In the 6f handicap (17.10), course specialist Mission Impossible looks weighted to go well at a big price.

The Tracy Waggott trained 10-year-old is a four time winner at the venue, and two of those successes have come over this afternoon’s trip.

In the last of those 12 months ago, Mission Impossible kept on gamely to score by a neck off a mark of 63.

The veteran is now able to race off just 1lb higher having failed to trouble the judge in four subsequent outings.

That gives Mission Impossible every chance from a handicapping perspective, and the son of Kyllachy looks sure to come on significantly for his recent outing over course and distance following 283 days on the sidelines,

Another plus is that Mission Impossible is versatile as regards ground, and everything looks in place for a big run.
