Newbury preview: Speedy Boarding can pass Listed test
Published:Speedy Boarding created a good impression when scoring last time out and can take the step up into Listed company in her stride to land the 1m 2f feature contest on today’s card at Newbury (15.25).
The Hughie Morrison-trained filly shaped with bags of promise when third to the smart Star Of Seville in a strong 1m maiden at Doncaster on her sole start as a juvenile, and duly improved for the step up in trip when landing a 1m 2f contest at Goodwood on seasonal reappearance.
After racing close-up on the heels of the leaders, Speedy Boarding was switched out wide by jockey Freddie Tylicki to deliver a challenge and ran on strongly to beat Journey by 1/2 a length.
The daughter of Shamardal knuckled down to the task well and found plenty despite still showing signs of inexperience, and the front two pulled six lengths clear of the field to give the form a solid look.
It was a most taking performance from Speedy Boarding, and one which suggested she would be well up to making her mark at this level.
The three-year-old is certainly bred to be up to the task, and the fact that she has an entry in the Irish Oaks shows that connections clearly hold her in the highest regard.
With the prospect of plenty more improvement looking assured, Speedy Boarding can take this before going on to even better things.
In the 1m 4f handicap (17.05), Mr Bissto is a fascinating contender now stepped up in trip following an eye-catching effort on seasonal reappearance.
The gelding is trained by the shrewd Ian Williams and looked a handicap project when shaping with promise in three quick runs in maidens at the back end of last year.
That view was confirmed when Mr Bissto put in an improved effort on debut in that sphere when third to third to Stormin Tom over 1m 2f at Nottingham on return to action.
The three-year-old tracked the leaders until getting outpaced two from home before staying on again inside the final furlong to grab third close home.
Although beaten 5 1/2 lengths Mr Bissto was not knocked about and is entitled to come on significantly for the run, his first in 122 days.
It was also an effort which suggested Mr Bissto’s current mark of 64 was exploitable, and the step up in trip to 1m 4f this afternoon looks sure to suit the son of High Chaparral.
