Superstar colt to continue progress
The Commonwealth Cup is very new to the Royal Ascot meeting, having its first run back in 2016, when Muhaarar took the prize for Charlie Hills before the lovable Quiet Reflection stormed clear to win 12 months ago. This is one of the very few Group 1s Aidan O’Brien has not won, but he looks highly likely to put that right with Caravaggio this year.
The brilliant three year old began his career with a comfortable victory on the Dundalk all weather last April, before making the switch to turf for a Listed Race at the Curragh, which he won going away on the run in. It was hard for people not to take notice at this meeting last year, when he showed tremendous fighting spirit to land the Coventry Stakes.
He followed that up with a Group 1 Phoenix Stakes win back at the Curragh in August and wasn’t seen again until last month, when he ran in a Group 3 at Naas. The nature of his win, running on strongly to go five lengths clear in the final furlong, indicates he may have come on a bit during his break and it has everyone excited to see what he can do now back at Royal Ascot.
If he continues his expected path of progression, he will be almost impossible to beat in this one barring a major setback.
