Festival record gives Mullins every chance
Only Nicky Henderson has saddled more Cheltenham winners than Willie Mullins, and Ireland’s exporter extraordinaire has already added four more to his haul from the first two days of the 2016 Festival.
Dynamic duo Douvan and Annie Power scooped Arkle Challenge Trophy and Champion Hurdle success on Tuesday, and more Mullins magic could land the hat-trick in the Gold Cup.
In Djakadam, his trainer has the horse who was runner-up in this blue ribbon race last year. An impressive 12-length winner of the Punchestown Chase in December, he will want to go one better.
Don Poli, meanwhile, is a dual Festival winner, scooping the 2015 RSA Chase. This season he’s recorded victories at Aintree and in the coveted Lexus Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas.
On His Own is a relative veteran to his stablemates at 12, and finished fifth in last year’s Gold Cup, but gives punters and Mullins a third chance of glory in Cheltenham’s most prestigious steeplechase.
